stunt questions
Pay attention to your wheelies, notice how you're contantly moving the throttle to balance on one wheel? The second that you back off the throttle, shift. The two difficuties you're going to run into, are losing the wheelie when you shift, and grabbing neutral all the time. Worry about completing the shift with the wheel in the air first, then work on keeping it up. Shifting sounds easy, but it forces you to take your focus off the wheelie. Once you do it about 100 times, however, it becomes a piece of cake. Also, second gear is obviously going to behave differently with the throttle than first. Don't get disgusted. Just try over and over and over and over and over and....................HEY, THERE IT IS!!! Now...........all you stunters with steering dampeners that have just read this, please look at the steering dampener topic and see if you can answer my question. Thank you.
Man, you're going to get nothing but neutrals when shifting from 1st->2nd without the clutch. It's just such a huge throw.
Furthermore, you're going to end up RIGHT at the peaking of your torque curve in second and that might throw you for a loop, so to speak (yes, bad pun).
Learn to do them in 2nd. Trust me, the Gixxer 600 can be wheelied in 2nd no problem.
Use the bounce technique (standup). Here's what I do with my R6 (stock gearing, Ivans jet kit -- exhaust is just for sound, so that doesn't matter):
I get rolling in 2nd. I don't know the RPM or MPH so much, just when it "feels" right. I'd say I start this all going about 40mph.
Next, stand up a little and roll the throttle on about 1/2. Once you get going a bit (maybe about 45-50?), bounce your weight on the pegs hard, close the throttle, then open it back up right away. The rebound of the front forks + throttle will bring that sucker up -- and it can come up really quick, trust me.
It doesn't even matter if you have high compression and rebound damping because I do (and very stiff at that). I can even do it in 3rd a little -- just started trying in 3rd gear though.
Anyway, once you can get them up in 2nd and ride them out nicely, then worry about shifting. Use the aforesaid techniques to shift into third.
Seriously, once you get used to getting them up in 2nd, you will never want to do it in first again... until/unless you get really good and want to start doing REALLY slow wheelies... but if you were at that skill level, you wouldn't be asking this question.
Don't mess around in first gear. You're just asking to loop it.

He didn't ask about pulling it up in second gear, he asked about shifting. He also said he was doing alright in first gear. And I never have trouble hitting 2nd without the clutch, even while doing a standup. And don't be afraid of first gear, I wheelie from a dead stop at the local track all the time. It pisses them off, but they can't prove that I do it on purpose (of course, when your shifting gears on one wheel all the way down the track, it's hard to play innocent). I'm not tryin to start an argument. I've just done this on many bikes (98 gixxer 750, 99cbr F4, 2000 929, 98 ZX6R, 96 ZX7R, 2001 TLR, 97 TLS, 2002 RC51, 2000 YZF 600). I found the YZF 600 to be the most difficult, because it is quite a long throw. But after about 6 tries, I got it. Make love, not war. Peace.
I forgot. I've shifted from 1st to 2nd (clutchless) on a 2001 R6 also. That thing's got the smoothest gearbox. I want one for a stunt bike. I witnessed with my own eyes someone pulling a standup in fourth with stock gearing (clutchin the hell out of it of course).
I can clutchless shift my 00 R6 from 1st -> 2nd. I've done it many times... but it never worked while in a wheelie.
The R6 is known to have one of the most UNSMOOTH gearboxes. I don't know why you think it's so smooth?
And yes, I've seen pics/vids of people bouncing up 3rd and 4th gear standups with more or less stock bikes. It's all in technique (and having no rebound or compression damping!).
And the reason I told him not to play in first is because that's just asking for it. Great, he can do it in first -- now it's time to play in a gear that isn't nearly so sensitive. I don't want to see people doing things that are going to bite them in the *** (at least not at an unreasonable rate).

Whatever. I'll just go back to concentrating on my shows. www.crazycramer.com. Seems like someone is always contradicting me, but what do I know. right? Hell, I don't care, just as long as I get paid.
I use the clutch everytime I shift on a wheelie, 1st-6th. Unless I accidently shift while doing standups, that happends more than I would like. I think that its pretty sweet that you can do it without. It doesn't feel right for me.
If you want I could take the time to tell you how to change your gears so your shifting 1up and 2-6down, it makes it a lot smoother. It only takes about 10 to 20 min of your time and doesent coust you a thing.
