Best way to learn stand-ups?

I have a zx6r 636 all stock besides slip-on, no regearing or anything. I'm trying to figure out the best way to learn stand-ups. What gear, speed, rpm's, whatever i need to know. Do i need to bounce it or clutch it? All replys are appreciated. THANKS :YEAH

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

from my experience its best just to go out and learn it yourself. and if youre concentrating on the rpm's etc. it makes it harder for me. try it out yourself and see what you like best.

bounce 2nd gear. get the bike into the power in 2nd gear, let off throttle/push on forks and wack it open. work on your timing, its almost simultaneous. the bounce and throttle is one smooth motion.

I would say clutch it in first. Its not as unpredictable as the bounce/power method. Other than that just go out and practice as much as you can. Good luck

Stand up...
if you know how to already wheelie it then just stand up while your doing it... bouncing in second (no matter what bike) will get you in the standing position.

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

I've been trying to learn to wheelie as well. The problem I come across is that I'll be in second gear crusing at about 30mph....pull the clutch in till about 7-8k and release while gassin it more. I'm sure this is the same with a lot of people, but when I release the clutch the bike pulls up a little...it gives a sudden jerk and feels like I'm about to get thrown off the back. Which hinders me from continuing to pull the front wheel any further up. I guess my fear of crashing again may be holding me back....anyone one ever come across this problem?

my is to have someone show you in person. Internet advise just isn't the same. They can't watch you and show you what your doing wrong.

I'd find a local stunter......someone will hook-up with you and show you some **** for sure....

I was the same way, though the clipons where going to fly right out of my hands when I first started doing standups. Just practiced a lot in first gear, and it finally just clicked. Once I got it up for the first time it started to feel more comfortable imediately

yep i wrecked doin a wheelie and its been hard as hell to fight my self to get to doing em again.. and now that i started doing them again i watched my friend wreck his new 10r doing a 2nd gear sitdown.... came over backward
its all a mind set, dont think about wrecking.... as for the jerk.. try not to drop the clutch.. just slip it out really fast.
it takes some practice but its the key.. i was doing the same thing and all it is is that your spining your tire...

You can avoid that by clutching it up instead of powering it up.

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

I have found that at least with me when I clutch it up at 15-20mph instead of 30+ in first gear it's a lot easier to get it up really high without running out of revs.

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

Take your time. You don't need to get it to balance point your first night out, if ya know what I mean.

Post up on how it went.

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

Well, it went O.K. I didn't wreck it seems to be easier for me to power it up and then try to stand up. I can't get my timing right with bouncing it and cracking the gas, I feel like i'm going to fall off the back of it. But i'm going to keep trying thanks for your info.

Re: Best way to learn stand-ups?

I just learned to wheelie myself in the past few months and standups felt the same way to me when I started. Now it's all I do. Try with your left foot back on the back peg. It helped me feel a bit more comfortable with being able to reach the rear brake and with having more stability so I didn't feel like I was gonna get tossed.

Next thing is to get comfortable on your bike standing. If you can't ride around and accelerate and decelerate smoothly enough to feel pretty comfortable riding standing in 1st gear then you need to practice throttle control and get used to the feeling of standing more. It looks goofy but do it when there aren't cars around. Just ride around standing Pretty soon you'll feel more comfortable doing anything standing, including wheelies
