Wheelie help
Wheelie help
Ok first of all I am in my second year of riding and still learning a lot. Last year I looped my bike from being around people that new nothing about doing wheelies so we all learned the hard way needless to say after last summer I was the only one that still had a bike. Anyway lets fast forward to my current problem.
Just for technical specs I have a '03 gsxr 600 which is geared at -2 and +6. I started out this year determined to roll my wheelies instead of last year pulling it up and down all the time. I have learned to roll them decently. The method I am using is to slip the clutch in 2nd and I am confertable doing that the problem I am running into is I am hitting my rev limiter and it brings me down. I work with a guy that stunts also and he says I am not high enough, this may be true but I am in a sit down and I have to look to the right or left to see where I am going and my wife says my tail is about 1-1 1/2 foot away from the road. I know that I need to shift but how and when? I have tried to clutch it up into third but no luck and stand ups scare me still. Any advice would be appreciated. I imagine it's just like learning to roll you got to learn it on your own but at least I ask first!
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Wheelie help
if you run out of rpm's while clutching its all because you are still under BP so you are "chasing" the front tire.
when at BP you dont gain ANY speed or RPM.
i highly suggest standing up, it makes getting bp a lot easier, and you can see where you are going.
goodluck.

Found my problem, my wife can't judge how high I'm going from behind me. I went out with my dude the other day and he said I needed to go higher. I practiced after that and found he was right. Problem is that bothers me cause I watch all these stunt videos and the guys on the same gsxr 600 are not as high as I'm going. My next problem is I can't see where I am going now and the bike wobbles any thoughts? What is the best way to judge and learn stand ups?
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Wheelie help
you need to just stand up as the bike is coming up. im just learning standups too. i basically spent an hour doing only first gear stuff. just jump up on both front pegs as the wheelie is coming up. do it from a dead stop so you get the feel. it will feel kinda hard at first on your legs but then you will just get it. there wont be an in between. you will either sit or stand. GRAB YOU SACK & GO FOR IT. thats all the advice i can give.
once you stand up you will find it is easier to find the rear brake and you will love the view.

Re: Wheelie help
dont know if this will help but i lean the bike a bit to one side and then lean my head to the other ,thats just how i see when doing a sit down. the other guys are right a stand up is going to let you see right over the front of the bike and everything else
one more thing when i was learning stand ups i did it all in one motion and i still do, stand up as the bike is coming up , but if that dont work for you what i sometimes do is do a sit down and then well i am riding the sit down then i stand up, that might work for you and it looks kinda cool :YEAH and whats funny about that is i knew a guy who could pull stand ups all day but for some reason he just could not pull a sit down up so he would do a stand up and then sit down for a sit down i guess it worked for him .

Re: Wheelie help
For wobble, I found dropping the rear tire pressure down to around 20 to 25 psi helps out tremendously.
Also, after I practice for a couple of days, and I feel like I am skying
the front end, I get my wife to video tape me. It has helped me out in seeing
how high the front end is really getting.
Good luck, and go at your own pace!

Re: Wheelie help
Thanks for all the advice guys. I have my tire pressure down to 25 psi already. I ahve stood up and I don't have a problem doing that but I don't know how to judge where the tail is and it feels weird to. The idea of starting out in first my bike is way too twichy in first and the powerband is overwhelming.

Re: Wheelie help
Ok first off thanks for all the replies it really helps. I am standing up now and really can't get myself to stay sitting now. When I do do a sitdown it feels really easy now but when I hit bp on a sitdown my bike wobbles really bad so I don't do it very often. The standups I am learning in second with my gears at -2d +6u and it's working. Wife took a picture the other day and I have a problem that I am leaning toward the front of the bike on a standup and can't quite find bp yet but only been riding standups for a week or so can't be pro in a day I guess but any advice I would appreciate.

Re: Wheelie help
Hey guys,
I need some help!!
For starters im on my first bike, and handle it well. Now im wanting to do wheelies. I know im gonna get some sh_t about it but I have a 1990 can-o-tuna 600, as some may put it "Katana". Its all i could afford for now.
But like ive read in other post, if you can stunt a Katana you can stunt anything. Ok its really frontend heavy. I have been going about 25 mph and going about 6 rpm pulling the clutch in and turning the throtle back till 11rpm the letting the clutch out fast. Most of the time the back tire breaks loose, and my back end fishtails. But I have had it up about a foot, and another time about 2 1/2 feet off the ground. How can I get to the B/P and keep it there, and pull a wheelie all the time instead of here and there? Also can this be done in other gears other than first with my set up??
Hope someone can help me with this!!
Thanks

ook,
#1: Don't worry about height.
#2: Don't ever do another sit down wheelie!
#3: Stay Away from first gear.
#4: Get a Leather Jacket.
#5: Allways Smile.
Ok, first of all, third gear will come up, i promise you, higher the gear the easier the wheelie. Now i suggest u learn to bring 2nd up every time at the same height like 3 feet just for starts and ride it out at that height till revlimiter, this will teach u some consistant throttle control, don't try to impress your friends/wife impress your self. after u can ride a gear out at the same height with minimum throttle roll, start to get them higher.. learn to pulse your throttle. when u hit BP ur bike will feel weightless. u don't wanna start riding balance point yet cause ur bikes not really set up for it and your not skilled enough. once ur holding wheelies at the same height thru entire gears and get really comfy, start bringing it higher till ur bike feels weightless, then when u do this u pulse ur throttle. when u hit BP let off throttle a little bit then back up into BP.. and wha laa you'll be bashing in your tank the next day and do high chairs.
oh and mr katana boy. go practice.

Re: Wheelie help
ok i might as well throw my question into the pot, i have the same K3 gixxer 600 its just -1 with a K&N and a TRE, first gears i can do all day, but i dont like em unless just to pop it up in front of people at a stop light or somethin, i laid mine over and havent gotten a new left front peg, its about half there, enough to ride it, i put my left foot on the back and cover the rear brake, im in 2nd at about 40, i dont really like clutching it so i bounce my front end, but im basically already standing, kinda hunched over, and on the rebound and punch the throttle, its not coming up high enough, do i need to lean back to hit the BP quicker and easier or just more gas or what are u guys thoughts. thx
Re: Wheelie help
I learned to hit BP in second gear at about 65 MPH ... it is high but i can ride them for as long as i want to. I never got the hang of sitting down except for first gear beginner stuff. Standing up stabilizes the bike more and try not to squat or lean over the tank.. just lay back relax and lock your knees. That help the wobbles and helps the bike stay in a good line. I now can go past BP in second and slow it down more using engine braking. :YEAH
You'll be damn high up there for BP but it feels great.
Also for the question above .. you don't need to stand on the rear peg. I bounce mine from both my pegs... i have the same a K3 sixxer with just -1 and nothing else, besides a cage. Bounce it and timing is crucial... rev it to about 8 grand... this is about where i learned and bounce hard and WHACK the throttle. Once you get timing down you can lower RPM's its possible ... and i've even heard of people bouncin' it up in third with -1 and timing. I've tried but can only get a couple inches if any.
I'm just now getting into clutching it.

Re: Wheelie help
Update. Ok I have a leather jacket but ohio's weather is so brutal I never wear it too darn hot I will look into a mesh. Anyway I have been riding standups now for a couple weeks and I think I have improved in second gear I can go ( this is how we measure how far we are going cause we live in such a rural area
) 5-6 telephone poles in a standup and now I can bounce/clutch third and ride a standup 8-9 telephone poles. Still find myself leaning on my tank though and when I force myself to lean back or lock my legs I always go to the right or left to much. I am starting to learn to stear by moving my weight from side to side but it's a slow process. I know I can't be a pro in a day anymore advice I would appreciate. Also I have been thinking of adding 4 teeth in the rear anyone got a bike setup at -2 +10 if so do you like it.
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Wheelie help
Ok it's been over a year now since my last post for wheelies. Since my last post I can do a standup as long as I want and have been learning things like iron crosses, high chairs, and seat standers. I can ride standups now on front pegs and getting used to right foot covering and left foot on the rear peg, seems easier to balance! My main focus is my standups. I can go as far as I want now and can bring it up and down smooth but I accelerate till i get up to 85. I need some advice on slowing down. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan
