3rd gear 954 wheelies

Been riding for 5 years now, but just started wheelies last season and standups this season. 1st gear I power it up standing or sitting can ride it for a while, 2nd clutch it standing or sitting can ride it pretty long, learning how to turn while wheeliing now. But I wanna start doing 3rd gear. Not sure if I should power it or clutch it. I tried clutching it and it just jumped a bit. Oh and when Im clutching 2nd I do not bounce it at all. Should I practice powering and bouncing 2nd before going on to 3rd gear?
Im +2 in the rear sprocket right now.

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

i bounced up my 954 in 3rd a couple times with stock gearing, but i cant get it everytime(rarely). it was too fast for me(set the wheelie down a good bit over 100mph) so i stick w/ 2nd gear stand ups. why not just balance a 2nd gear standie? no one wants to wheelie at 120mph anyway

There's absolutely no reason to wheelie a bike in third gear, you crash that **** at 100mph and you'll be sorry (or at least dead).

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

I've wheelied a 954 before, but not in 3rd gear. I've wheelied my 750 in 3rd gear at like 85-90 on the highway. Only because it's easier on my wrist to go up in the bottom of 3rd then the top of 2nd gear. Now that I have my 1000 I wheelie 3rd gear more often. I pick it up at like 55-60 in 3rd and it's alot easier on my wrist then 55-60mph in 2nd. Keep in mind that there is less engine breaking in 3rd, so cover the rear brake. But the bike doesn't accelerate as fast if u get to low and to me it's easier to correct. Now I've never wheelied a 954 in 3rd, but I'm sure it can come up at like 60mph and if your going for distance it would be alot easier on your throttle hand.

I clutch my f4i in third at 40mph. third is way smoother than 2nd. it takes a bit longer to get up bp. but it accelerates way slower, plus i think the lower rpms is easier on motor

higher the gear, the smoother the power band, much easier to control in third..

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

a 954 should come up easy in 3rd... my gsxr 600 comes up in 3rd (not easily, but it will). no matter what gear, you can go as slow as you want, until there's no more rpm's to hold the weight. (meaning you can be in 5th and still go 55mph, but maybe not 20mph). you're just not at the balance point right yet. and 2nd gear is ideal for the highway, for going 50-55. 60-65 is ideal for 3rd. lol, i've rode a 954 like twice, and i want one.... they feel GOOOOD on one wheel, very compfortable.

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

Thanks guys, I can balance 2nd gear and ride it for quite a bit, but I wanna start bring it up at 80-90. How often are you cruising at 80 or 90? I know when Im on the highways Im never going slower than that. You know its when you can be cruising at 85, pull it up and ride it for a while.
Anyway thanks for the help guys!

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

i can bounce mine up in 3rd going around 75 mph. its a bit harder to keep up cause there isnt as much power as second so if it start to come down it probably will. i just learned clutching with the left foot on the rear peg in second gear going aroing 35 mph. so next time i go on the highway im gonna try that in third.

Re: 3rd gear 954 wheelies

my 02 gsxr 1000 stock gearing will come up in 6th but why would you want to i can rock blocks until i cant hold on any longer in 2nd 3rd gear is to fast you will have to pass trafic if you rock 2nd high enough with the rear break you will be going around 55-65 you can rock out all day and not have to worry about changing lanes and going around cars just my
