Powerin up a 954
What up peeps I have a 03 954 I have clutched it up in first gear and what not. I cant ride em out yet but Im workin on it. The question I have is in regards to sit downs and stand ups in 2nd gear. when doing stand ups I was told powerin them up is the way to go so that is what Im gonna try however where do I want the RPMs for 2nd gear stand ups and is 2nd good for bein a lil more safe on the whole loopin deal? Also when clutchin in first what do I need to listen for when tryin to ride em out???
Oh yea I have one more for you guys have any of you relocated your rear break to make it easyer to cover while doin wheelies if so what position works best cuz when I do it with it at the stock location I find it hard to cover (I also dont even thing about coverin it half the time so whats a good way other the recking to train yourself to remember to cover it?) Thank people.

My two cents...
1. Learn your bike in 1st gear first. Its twitchy but when you get comfortable and really ryde them out, 2nd gear is butta.....
2. Always use your clutch in 1st. That bike has too much power and comes up fast. Powering 2nd is cool but get used to 1st gear before attempting.
3. Always, always cover your rear brake. I am not sure about relocating it but it is not that hard to cover, especially if you have your left foot on the passenger peg. Feels more comfortable.
Reason why you shouldn't power 1st.... This is my boy Artie last year. Please don't loop, be safe, wear your gear.

Re: Powerin up a 954
with my 54 first gear at about 4k rpm, let off a little and then wack it(not too hard) and it'll come right up. it'll come up fast(too fast) so be ready. 2nd gear at about anywhere from 5.5k rpm and up i stand up, wack the throttle and she comes right up. comes right up so cover that rear brake.

I have 03 954 and I can ride a first gear power up with total control for long time. I've now gotten to the point where I can power up in first, go for awhile, then shift into second. and ride. working on shifting into 3rd... etc. I'm just now starting to power up first gear stand ups, and shifting into second. not quite there yet but close. one of my biggest problems so far is the stoppies. every time I get into one my bike really wants to swing to the right, hard. could the right caliper be squeezing harder? when I try to get it way up it slides to the right to hard. I have some video from last Sunday I'll have to post up here. a good burn out, (not me) perfect 180. and a couple good wheelies. I'll try and post it tomorrow. I just crashed again for a second time in two weeks..... so I don't think I'll be ready for this weekend. dose anyone know someone who can fix stuff on the right handle bar. everything on it was tore off. brakes, kill switch, throttle, etc. if I get that fixed I'll be good to go. my digital cam really took some good video last Sunday, I'll work on getting that posted soon. Sarah, you back yet???? :YEAH

hahahah na you cant have it but I got it together with covering it yesterday. I did a really high wheelie and got nervious and the first thing I did was come off the gas then tap the rear break so its all good now. hahaha

naaaaa if power up is soooooo dangerous it must take some skill. i can "NAIL" a power up ever time. "TOTAL" control. i think that's the best way to get used to wheelies. i can start out like 10 mph and slam on it and get bike to stand right up, 10 oclock? maybe more if need be. then find balance point and shift into second. clutching up in second is much ez're. so if you're not that good get, that's probably the way to go.
Re: Powerin up a 954
I don't agree with all the Power Up bashing. I learned to wheelie clutching it up and realized that it was going to jack up my bike sooner or later. I now clutch up everything just fine and SAFE! In the end, either way is just as good! Thats just my

Re: Powerin up a 954
In 2nd if you want it to come up nice and smooth. Get it to about 7grand and just roll on it and give it a little tug. It will come right up.
Stand ups - You can stand basically at any thing over 5 grand and it will come right up

Re: Powerin up a 954
Man, that powerin up stuff is dangerous, and it puts you in alot higher RPMs when you hit the ballance point. the reason powering it is so dangerous is because the bike does not come up quite as quick, so you have to stay in the gas longer and harder. when it does hit the B.P. it will come up really fast and hard. When clutching, you can almost be completely off of the gas once you hit the B.P. Also, there's a tennancy for the bike to lean to the side when under power and under the ballance point, which could lead to some nasty tank slappers, and finally, it will cause your wheelies to be at much higher speeds which is more dangerous for numerous reasons. If you want your first gear wheelies to go for a long ways, try shifting to second at as low of RPMs as possible. I never used the clutch when I used to shift in my wheelies for fear of accidentally looping with the clutch, but that's just a matter of what you feel best with.

Re: Powerin up a 954
I agree that powering it up is unsafe. On my 600 at this altitude it takes a hell of a lot to power it up, and I know from experience that it'll either hop, or come up REALLY quick.
On a 954 with that much power, that means it'll either come up fast, or come up so fast it'll loop you off before you even have time to react (watch that video).
