front sprocket nut missing

I just started having problems w/ my chain eatin away at my frame, tore everything off and found that my front sprocket nut was missing, and the sprocked was just kinda sittin on there. So my question is, can I just use a reg nut from a hardware store, something strong tho. AND do I need that retaining washer thing that goes on between the nut and the sprocket? OR can I find one of those at a hardware store as well? Do i even need that peice? All bike shops are closed sundays and mondays here, so im just sittin.

and by the way, the missing sprocket nut was never touched by me, only the dealer, im the only owner of this bike and its still under warranty, should I get them to pay for mynew sprockets, chain, and frame??? The frame was shaved down by the chain cause I had to ride it back home. It went a couple mm into the frame in a couple spots. TIA ~nick

Re: front sprocket nut missing

good luck getting the dealer to pay for anything....

i had the same thing happen on my old 97 gsxr750. the front was just wobblin back n forth.. i never even noticed until i snapped my clutch cable and was changing it...

id say lowes, or home depot, or some specialty nut/bolt store would have a replacement. make sure its a good lock nut though, and i have no idea off hand what size nut and thread.. sorry cant be more help...

I can figure the nut size out, but what about that metal washer piece that wraps around the sprocket nut? It goes between the nut and the sprocket, do I need that? Thanks for ur unput!!! ~nick

Its on a R6, and when I call the 1-800 Yamaha customer service number and start complaining about how I want my **** paid for under warranty, they jump on it right away usually. So Im gonna give em a call tom. and see what they'll do.

I wouldnt touch it. You paid for the warranty so i would take it back and make sure it was fixed correctly. also you wont want to throw some odd nut on there because the threads might look like the right size but there probably not. If you strip out the sprocket shaft then you are responsable for the damage and the shop is not going to touch it. Just my 2cents.

Re: front sprocket nut missing

Well, I saw the nut on there like 2 months ago or so, so that means it had to come off while I was riding. Im pretty sure it was the one dealers fault while I was in cali, I had my swingarm changed cause of the battery acid problem it had leakin onto the swingarm, they changed my ****, and like 3 months later, my rear end collapsed on me while i was on the freeway, and i bet ya they didnt tighten that sprocket nut like they shoulda too. That was the Yamaha of Modesto, CA dealer. Always had problems w/ their service dept. Anyway, im just gonna call customer service tom. and let them take care of me, cause they WILL!! haha, THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR INPUT!!!! ~nick
