Dirtbike wheelie help
Dirtbike wheelie help
I took my new (to me) yz80 out today. I need some advice on wheeling. I tried a few different techniques clutching and non clutching. I can get it up in pretty much any gear with or with out the clutch. My problem is holding it up. I either let it drop right away or find my self slipping off the back of the seat and having to stop. Towards the end of the day I think I was getting them the longest by being in first and riding close to where the powerband starts, I closed it and snapped it open while covering the brake. I still wasn't getting much distance though. Its tough with this two stroke cause you have to being going pretty fast to get to the power band even in first, and it snaps up so quick you have to be on top of your S(%) or it loops..... which i did a few times.
Any advice you guys have, I'm beginning to think I should have held out for a ttr or xr.

Re: Dirtbike wheelie help
is your yz80 2 stroked??? i know the stunters recommend 4 stroke for wheeling that type of cc dirtbike..... about the slipping off just hold the **** on..... i use to slide off all the time on my friends xr80 when doing 12's but i just lock the seat w/ my knee's..... im not really sure about the wheeling though , all i can say for now is just keep at it.
Re: Dirtbike wheelie help
Yeah its a two stroke. I know 4's are better but I got a really good deal on this, piped, all new ufo plastics and tires. I figured if I didn't like it I could sell it and get a ttr without loosing any money.
I tried to squeeze with my legs but its hard to one those skinny seats. If anyone else has any thoughts I'd be glad to hear them.

Re: Dirtbike wheelie help
all my frenz are convinced that we can't wheelie 80's cuz now that we hav 125s we got blocks. um advice is try to go really slow steadily lik maybe 15 mph way before you are near any sort of real power and clutch it up. remember less gas than more dun worry that u dont go far its better than flippin the bike.
my suggestion is start learnin endos on a dirtbike (80) because they are close to the floor.

Re: Dirtbike wheelie help
Yeah, endos are not a problem with this bike. But I really want to work on my wheelies. I'm going to keep at it for awhile and if I don't seem to be making any progress I'll ditch it towards a ttr or xr. Meanwhile I'm gonna try and convince my cuz to pick up a fiddy. The grip tape is a great idea, i'll pick some up and use it the next time I go out.
I attempted to clutch it up going slow, but unless I get it reved high enough it won't come up. Maybe if I could get my weight back farther. I was looking at putting a peg on the back. How do people do that? Just weld it to the swingarm, don't they break when people go down?

yah man, i used to fall to each side.. I found a bigger parking lot where I could steer the 'falling' into a big sweeping circle. It steers easier at the balance point.
I also found that sticking your legs way out to the side help with side to side control.
have you tried to clutch it in second? thats the only way I can get my XR100 to wheelie good.
let us know how how your extra peg installation goes.. i always wanted to weld a BMX slider on.
