I had the same problem when learning tank wheelies. Not at Balance, then Bam you hit the power band.!! Try dropping the clutch at higher RPMS. It helps to have people watch and give you feedback.

2nd gear wheelies

You need to go slower when you start your 2nd gear wheelies. Especially on a 929. I have a 954 and I used to do them at 60 mph, way to fast!!1 Now I start at about 40 and feather the clutch, I dont pop it, just hold it in a bit give it some gas and release. Most people pop the clutch by giving an even amount of gas and then and then let off the gas causing that jumpy **** you were talking about before. Just feather it slower and ride it for miles!

if the front is only coming up a foot when you clutch it, you are definately not clutching it hard enough. it should snap up really high when you clutch it right. keep practicing with it and you'll get used to how much gas you need and all and you should be able to clutch it to the height you want, then take over with the gas. that's the whole point of clutching it so you use the clutch for height and not run out of rpms.

what is happening is the bike starts lifing and it takes less power to get it further back once it reaches a point, hence the danger in powering up wheelies...cause they hit that point then snap back really hard after that when the person is still on the throttle.

I bring my seconds up at 35-40, a quick snap of the clutch and a rear peg and she's at instant balance. You are either letting off the gas because you don't wanna fall over, or timing with the clutch / amount of clutch is a little off. Just find a long stretch of road and keep practicing, you will find a groove, listen by ear, **** that tach.
