Crash cage or no???
Crash cage or no???
OK... I crashed my first 12 yesterday, it was also my first scrape. I cracked the case cover but we JB welded it and it appears it will be fine.
I've heard alot about crash cages breaking frames and I've heard great stories about them saving bikes. I'm not sure what to do. I cannot afford to go out and buy a new frame, and at the same time I don't want to **** more parts up. Someone please help and tell me what to do. And if you to lazy to look to the left I ride a 98 900RR.
Crap...someone please move this to the main page.

I like my FI cage. RR's break motor mounts in a HARD crash..it just does. I had both mine welded when 1 cracked. My bike was airborne and landed on its side when it happened. 2 other hard crashes 1 broke a rearset mount...again airborne and the peg didn't have a chance to fold up. highsided a couple times no prob and numerous drops cuz I just didn't feel like fighting to hold it. I would have had some big $$ damage if I wasn't running one. my .02
I saw another post somewhere on here about using high grade bolts with the cage can cause more damage to the frame.
So I'm guessing if you go down hard with shitty bolts or low grade bolts, just the bolts will break and won't take your frame with it.

I CRACKED 2 ENGINES DOING 12s,SO I DEFINITELY RECOMEND THE CAGE.WHEN YOU SLOW YOUR BIKE DOWN AND LOOSE IT THE BIKE HITS THE GROUND LIKE A SLEDGE HAMMER..........FLAT.........THE DAMN PEGS DIDNT EVEN HELP
go for it, i did, cracked the frame mount, no biggy, little bit of weld and it's back to new instead of me paying for a new motor.
they can take hell hard hits, but i found when your bike gets airborne and lands flat on the side it tends to break ****. Before that i dropped 12's all the time and no problem....just that airborne thing that screws it up.
oh ya, for my advice, you need to give me tips on doing hand stands on the bike
hit me up on aol or e-mail or PM....something, i just need tips.

i don't have a cage but i made myself some huge frame sliders, they stick out jsut far enough to protect the engine cover. my bike fell twice from 12, first time just bent the bolt, second time pulled the the bolt out of the motor (the bike had forward motion). the fact is if you crash your bike hard, stuffs going to break.
if you are going to put a cage on a RR before you go out stunting , if it has a hoop that goes under the bike bend it up as close to the exhuast as you can . a floor jack and a torch works nicely. the problem with the hoop is if you mouse trap the hoop will take a good hit when it hits the ground thus stressing the mounting point .do this enough times and you will damage your motor and or your motor mounts. but what most commonly happens is when the bike falls down on the side you have the same aluminum motor mounts being stressed in a different direction and the aluminum will break.
