04 636 hard shift and to get into nuetral??

Just traded the drz for an 04 636 am noticing that it shifts hard both in up and downshift, also it is hard to get the bike into nuetral while running. I tried adjusting the clutch on both ends with no luck. the kid i got it from said it just had a new clutch i have no way of proving it other than tearing it apart is it possible something is out of adjustment or the shift lever linkage is off???

I have 2 03's and had the same problem. Its kinda tricky to get used to but if you take your time clicking threw 1 and 2 you can find N every time

i also have a 636 while riding u can shift in to N but is a bit difficult but for the most part if Ur coming to a stop and try to hit N u will usually skip it only if u come to a complete stop will u hit N if Ur in 1st at a dead stop and go to shift up it will all ways hit N the counter shaft has small ball bearings that move to a locking position to prevent u from going in to 2nd at at a dead stop dont know if this help yall

What type of oil do you all use, and do you change it often?

When I have fresh oil in my f4i, it shifts soo much better, is really smooth.. After 500-1k miles on my oil, the tranny is clanky and hard to find neutral

Re: 04 636 hard shift and to get into nuetral??

alot of times the shifter itself is the problem , make sure it moves freely on the shaft and clean and lube it if it doesnt ..

as far as finding neutral if you are not moving and in first gear it should go right into neutral easy but going from second to neutral is hard to do , like mentioned above kawis have positive shift thingamajig so finding neutral while moving is a bitch

figured i will follow up since no one ussually does and it leads to more threads.

I pulled it apart which was cool ive never done a clutch on a bike. Suprisingly the Previous owner wasnt lying it did have new clutch discs but the pushrod for the clutch and the actuator arm were all chewed up spent about 55 bucks and read up and took my time (about an hour 1/2 tear down and reinstalled) she runs great now so hopefully this helps confused people in the future.

Re: 04 636 hard shift and to get into nuetral??

did you replace the bearing that the clutch release pin rides on ? when that bearing goes bad it turns the clutch release pin into a dremel tool and that will just chew up your brand new parts

Yah i checked that bearing but it seems to be in good shape and its stainless so i wouldnt imagine they go bad that often. guess i will find out if i wear through another one. Is there any other reasons they go bad?

not really , you should probably just get the bearing because i cant think of any other reason the pin and the release lever would be chewed up except for the bearing hanging up and causing the release pin to spin ..

the bearing isnt that expensive and it would be a shame to see you destroy your brand new parts ..
