02 954
Factory engine: no flapper mod, no servo pinned open.

Mod: 900rr idle cable. Besides round bar, cage and gears, its pretty much stock.

Last night I go to start my bike, and kill my battery in the mean time, bike turned over and over, but did not fire.

I took the tank off, pulled out the sending unit, took it completely apart, filter was clean, no particles in the silver slinky lookin stuff surrounding the filter. (the reason I did this, is because I just painted my bike, some over spray got into the tank, and when mixed with gas, well it just washes down into the tank...)I put it all back together, and after turning over about 25 times, it decided to fire.

DONT ASK ME WHY, but I decided to look at my headers (it was approximately 8pm) and they where "red" hot, Im like WTF?

When I get home from work today, Im going to make sure the 900 idle cable is not opened too much, although I dont see how this could make made headers turn red hot, as if it was running WAY lean.

Anything ???

Thanks ! ! ! !

my guess was that it didn't start because there was some particulate in the fuel and it may have hindered the engine from starting.

the headers glowing red, well how sure are you that the servo flapper is open? does the exhaust flow very freely? if ALL the pipes were red, not just 2 or 3, then it could be a indication the remaining firing cylinders are working harder to keep unfiring one(s) moving

dunno?! just my two cents! good luck

the headers on my 954 used to do the same thing.... they are full titanium.. maybe that has something to do w/ it.

But i wouldn't worry about it... mine never had any problems.

glowing headers mean a severly lean air/fuel mix. check for a diconected vacuum line or low fuel pressure.

Re: >> 954 Headers are RED Hot after 3 minutes? <<

Found Problem,

Factory Idle Cable was open too much, thus increasing the air mixture. when lowering the factory idle cable down to 1200rpm, I get a perfect starting, and perfect running bike, without glowing red headers.

When I up the factory cable to 2000rpm, the headers get red hot.

Too, I had a hose dissconnected from the tank to the vaccum box.

Too, the factory idle cable had been closed all the way (turned out all the way) therefore letting no air into the throttle bodies. This is another reason why my bike didnt start.

Thanks all for the feedback, my bike runs **** now.
