636 loose fork feet
636 loose fork feet
I've been struck by the loose fork feet of death. Not too keen on seeing them get torn off and me end up in the hospital so, how do you tighten these things up? There is a big *** allen key on the bottom when you take the axle out, seems to only spin and do nothing, and there is an allen key on the inside of the feet that requires taking the wheel off to access from what i've seen (didn't really take that good of a look at it.)
Re: 636 loose fork feet
if they are loose then i would replace them because the usually hog out the hole once they are loose ......
but with that said take off your wheel
loosen the set screw on the inside of the fork "foot"
not the one on the bottom thats for your dampening rod
then put the axle back in with out the wheel and the tighten the fork tube[the chrome part] into the "foot" with a strap wrench ....
i used a peice of bycycle tube under the strap wrench to give it some grip but mine only needed a 1/4 of a turn because i checked it before it got loose and hogged out the hole so i still recomend you get new forks....

Re: 636 loose fork feet
dude, your SOL allready on these, its called prevention.. u gotta tighten em when u install them or before...
best fix is to buy 05/06 forks and rotors. built by a much better company called SHOWA and no more problems.

yeah but u need to use two 05 front wheel spacers on the right side and get some 10mm spacers for your rear caliper.
Dont thank me either, credit goes to JohnnyP for the wheel conversion information

Re: 636 loose fork feet
are you sure? I see guys swapping swing arms quite a bit on kawiforums. Here is what one of the guys said about it.
You'll need the swingarm, caliper carrier, longer rear brake line from an 05-06, 05-06 rear rim and axle with the factory spacers, the links and dogbone.
You can use your shock and the swingarm pivot axle up front. You can also use your sproket, cush drive and rotor from your 04 rim on the 05-06 rim.
On your 04 swingarm on the right side there is bolt that is square and threaded, you'll need to keep this, you'll also need the dust shield on the right side. (just pry it up with a screw driver)
On the right side of the 05 swingarm, pry the dust shield off and replace it with the one off the 04 one. You will not need anything on the left side. When you put your rear shock in place you'll need to swap out the linkage because the bottom mount for the shock is bigger then the 04's mount. Attach the shock, then the dogbone, links etc..
You'll have to pull apart your chain to run it threw the 05 swingarm. Once you tighten everything down use a plumb bob to make sure that it is centered, which it should be and thats it.
You may need the special Kawi tool to remove the swing arm...it's a bit of a bitch to get the spindle nut off..even if you do manage to get it off with a hammer and a screwdriver (or whatever) you'll want a proper tool to get an actual torque spec back on that assembly. (well...I would anyways..)
