Lightbulb Video-ing of Stunters

This is a little something from me on Video taping stunters,
lately i have been sick and have been editting about 32 tapes in the past three weeks, so i got to see different ways of taping good and bad. i am going to share some of what i can think of now and maybe others can write in there hints or suggestions as well.

This is not for filming competitions or events!

First, if you are taping one stunter, stay on that person till they are done(it gets sloppy moving back and forth between stunters)

Try to not use the Zoom in button much, unless you have a tripod
just let them go out of range, otherwise you will get alot os shake from the camera that doesnt look good.

Use a good enough camera that you can download the video to the computer, for your own editting purposes
(this way you dont have to worry about:
sounds
not enough sunlight
too bright
oh i didnt want that on tape
all of it can be editted on the computer and more

film away from the group, this means you place your self away from where everyone else is watching, and tell the stunters, if they want to be on film come to where you are one at a time
(plus try parking away from every one, carry a small gas tank and if trouble comes duck away and come back without the camera and with the gas, saying i ran out of gas, heh heh that is why i was parked here)

Plan what stunts are going to be filmed, talk with stunters

very important, bring masking tape or other tape to put over the stunters license plate, dont want to get these people in trouble

when filming in a vehichle keep the music off, music cuts away from the natural motorcycle sounds, (example if someone is skiing you wont here their feet draging, exhaust, if they crash!)

have plenty of battery power or extra batteries

have enough tapes for the day, for better quality use tapes that have the "Metal Particle or Metal Evaported"

Tape only in LP or the best quality

Film the stunters opinions of the stunts, what they are to them, or how to do them, or just alittle about them

If you get caught try to smash the tape, rip out the reel what ever it takes!

Try different angles on the ground, on a truck, in a tree, off a bridge, in a building, on top of a building, in the center of the road, where ever you feel you will get the best action

when you are filming you are in control, if someone yells to you to do something give them one of these and tell them they can tape when you are done.

when you are not going to film make sure you turn off record, i see so many tapes of the ground and peoples asses that I dont want to see or if you put it away and leave it on, turn the damn thing off!

I have more to write, but i will write it later,
good luck taping

A note about this I'm 100% for NH and MA, that you do not have to give the tape or show the tape to any cop requesting it. As far as the rest of the states, I'm 99.9% sure it's the same way. The cops can strong arm you and say give it up or else but it is up to you. Once you hand it to them it's of your own free will and the tape becomes legal evidence, and legally theirs. So I'll repeat, you DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE THE TAPE TO THE OFFICER. No matter what he tells you. You are even fully entitled to tape the cops and everything that's going on while they're there, this may **** them off but it is your right. It will also ensure that if the cop gets out of line that you have proof, because we all know your word means nothing against the cops word when you're on the stand.

Thumbs up

Nice tips all around guys....

I don't do much videoing, but they are still great to know.

I love that tip about not giving the cam to the cops...I wonder if it's the case here in VT. It would have been nice to know cuzz a while ago we got stopped by the fuzz...The camera went off the side of the road into the grass.

If I had known this was the case we could have kept it running....awww hell.

Re: Video-ing of Stunters

Tip- If you're using a home video camera adjust the settings so that the date and time do not appear in the corner of the screen.

Re: Video-ing of Stunters

One thing I found out is to lift my bike up before you get to the camera no right in front of it. And don't use gp's when doin cicle burns cause you'll get no footage..
