To Torque or not to Torque
To Torque or not to Torque
Regearing today +10. when I get everything thing back together can I just ratchet everything tight or do you all get technical and use a torque wrench? Do I need to buy a torque wrench?
Re: To Torque or not to Torque
if your talking about your sprocket just tighten it down ,if your working on ahead gasket or some thing like that then buy a torque wrench
Re: To Torque or not to Torque
on certain things there is no choice but to tourque , such as heads ,cases , or anything with a tourque pattern as well. The whole point of tourquing is so that you dont over or under tighten your bolts you dont want em to snap or rattle loose . When you have a pattern ,you have to tighten them in a crisscross sequence if one of the bolts across from another isnt tight it could cause a chain reaction of loosening. So as a certified MC tech for over 10 yrs I recommend getting a inch pound n/m.tourque wrench (more common)
and also the foot pound wrench . And I always use red loctite to prevent vibration from loosening bolts. Do you have a manual? cause you need to know the specs. to tourque to , other wise you can call a shop .

Inch pound t-wrench??? NO!!! first one I got was an inch pound these are for very small jobs (I never used mine since I got a ft pound t-wrench). If your a mechanic using t-wrenches all the time you can jusify one. Buy one with foot pound increments they usually start at around 10 Ft. Pounds and go to like 70-100......very rarely do you need anything less (only on a few 6 mm thread bolts) Alot of manuals I have dont even list figures in inch pounds, so you have to convert or use the N-M.

and again......I bought a craftsman with ft. pound increments...it will do all motor bolts and also steering stem nut and axle nuts.....I just got it back from being calibrated.......I was astonished it was free of charge....I guess they fall under the lifetime guarrantee...which was crazy cause its a special tool....but im not complaining.
