F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
Someone please help me. My f4i keeps blowing clutches! I have replaced the fibers 3 times. I have replaced the steels, springs, hub...everything but the basket. The basket looks fine. Every time i put the damn thing together I can clutch it up in 2nd about 5 times. After that the clutch does not grip well enough to bring it up. I have taken this thing apart and put it back together about 10 times(seriously). I have tried all different types of oils including motorcycle oil. Nothing seems to help. I have taken the clutch apart and roughed up the steels and fibers with sandpaper. Once again i can clutch it about 5 times before it blows. What am I doing wrong? Should i not be clutching in 2nd with stock gearing? Should i try heavy duty springs? I am at my wits end!!!! Please help! BTW the last clutch fiber keeps breaking.
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
try heat cycling your clutch ...meaning ride it like a wus till its up to temp then let cool repeat 10 times put a couple hundred miles on it in small trips.....dont throw the clutch in and then beat it ...

Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
do you soak your fiber plates in oil for at least an hour before installing them? is your basket grooved up or pressure plate worn? and surely you keep freeplay in your lever.

Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
I HAVE replaced the springs. I did soak the plates. There are no grooves in the basket. I have plenty of freeplay in the lever. I think im gonna try an aftermarket clutch. Honda clutches keep blowing. Prolly gonna try some heavy duty springs/bolts too.
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
no after market clutch works as good as a factory honda clutch ...they use the best of the best ....if there is a problem its probably the way your braking it in or the way your installing it ....im not being a **** its just that most problems with a new clutch are usualy the install or the break in .....and i suggest you use non synthetic oil for the break in [not car oil ]
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
your problem is very very simple, either A: Pressure plate is warped or be, your basket and clutch boss is pitted to hell, replace basket, boss, pressure plate.
unassemble your clutch, leave puller rod in the pressure plate and spin pressure plate on puller rod, you should see warpedness, U WILL WARP these if u break alot of fibers...
#2: clutch boss = where the steel's fingers slide into, deep pitting will ruin proper operation/movement
#3: clutch basket = where fiber fingers hit, bad pitting will cause uneven pressure = broken fibers
ps: cheap 10/30 oil or some cheap oils will say energy conserving on the back in the circle seal on the back, DO NOT USE ENERGY CONSERVING OIL, it will cause slipage.

Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
Clutch boss = #4 in the picture, when you release your clutch your pressure plate closes on your steels and fibers delieving power to your counter shaft, constant clutch operation "dents/Pits" the clutch BASKET and clutch BOSS, that is where alot of stress is exzurted. when u pitt this pieces really bad from stunt abuse it will cause unleval closeing operation and the steels will cause the fibers to get clamped unevanly but the fibers BREAK and steels warp. when these pieces pit really bad its like sliding a washer down a bolt crooked.
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
I just tried a brand new clutch hub(boss). Didnt help. The basket did have some minor pitting. I filed the basket smooth 6 months ago and it still looks good. I am going to do the spin test on the pressure plate tonight, but i think it is pretty straight. I talked to a guy at barnett clutches today. He even told me to stick with a honda clutch. He did however, tell me to remove the judder springs and replace the last fiber disk(the small one) with a normal size one(like the one in front). Anybody ever tried this? A am also thinking about sprocketing the bike up. I think clutching it in 2nd with stock gearing might be putting too much stress on the clutch(i mostly ride highway).
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
beleve me, if you broke fibers into a few pieces and some of those pieces made it to the oil pan it will cause ur pressure plate to warp. and specialy through slipping heat cycles on n off. i been through the same problem u have on a 02 r6.
Re: F4i Clutch PLEASE HELP
The pressure plate is straight as an arrow. I am tired of messing with this thing. I just ordered all new honda parts: Basket, fibers, steels, hub, pressure plate, bolts, bearings, puller.....everything in my clutch will be new. Im gonna take the judder springs out and run a regular sized fiber in the back. Im also gonna try some Heavy Duty springs. If it slips again im setting it on fire.
