Tank welding Q's
Tank welding Q's
ok i pulled the newb stunter move a long time ago and beat my tank in wrong well b4 i needed to. now it has a forward slant and the back has a small crease that is cracking. jb fixed it for the time being but it cracks back open any time im on the tank. i wanna start tank tricks and the tank edge hits my tailbone and it sux.. my question is, if i start to dent it farther back the crack will split farther, has anyone welded extra to the tank to fill the crack? and does anyone have pics of a good 636 dent?? i guess i could figure this out by tryin it but i just wanna see what everyone else is doin..
Re: Tank welding Q's
Braising is good, but if you have a mig welder turn your voltage down to about .8 and the wire speed to maybe 3. Get a thick wire though, something like a .33+ if you can. The copper will help absorb some of the heat. Spot weld it slowly, build up the material. Don't try and weld the crease in one shot, the metal is tooooo thin for that and it will warp and eat holes through it. (learned that the hard way) Try and keep the heat down by using a cold rag after a couple of spot welds.
Best is to tig it though, but braising and mig will work in a jam.

If you take your time, and invest in a dolly and body hammers that stretch the metal, and proper angle blocks you can dent a take really well. I used my phone book and dead blow to get the dent started, but I finished with a ball pean, block of wood, and patience. Dented perfectly!

Sure, I'd do it... but how big are you? And do you like a deep dent in your tank or are you like me and put a little lip on it with a lot of grip tape?

NOOOOoooo.. the worse thing you can do is make the crack worse. If you still need to dent the tank in but the crease is only getting worse you will probably have to cut that section out, reshape a piece of metal into the hole and have it welded. The farther apart the crease gets, the harder it is for the crease to be stitched together with some welds.
