954 losing all power over 3500
954 losing all power over 3500
Got the bike back together (just put in a new motor) and it sounds perfect free reving but riding it it feels like it loses ALL power around 3500rpm and the exhaust sounds all bublly and poppy. I would think plugs but when I had plugs on the bike that needed replaced it just would'nt start and ran fine once started. So I'm wondering about the exhaust valve, any other ideas?

valve-are the cables hooked up? try moving it by hand to a different position, see if that helps. There is also a way to reset it, should be a plug over by the battery-small, nothing plugged into it. Jump the wires, turn the key on. Should hear the solenoid move. once it settles down, turn the key off, take the jumper out (only do that if the valve is connected still, if not, tie the valve open or gut it)

tried just disconnecting the cables and gonna take her for a little spin and see if it solves the problem, if it does then the ***** is getting gutted.

I ride GSXR's, but I do remember being in Daytona one spring after we put a 929 back together for my friend. It was gettin all crappy like that, but was an easy fix. When he set the fuel tank down from being propped up, he kinked the fuel line. It would run, but not at a higher rpm from fuel starvation. Doubt that's it, but thought I'd share.

3000-3500 is the point where the exhaust valve should open up. maybe you crossed the cables. Also the valve may stuck and the servo looses teeths from plastic gears.
Re: 954 losing all power over 3500
disconnecting the cables cleared it up, and seems to actully give smoother power than before so I'm thinking smoother power is better on a stuntbike anyways.

the exhaust valve has three positions. What position did you leave it at?
there is a mark on the valve, when the bike starts up and idles it should be facing front of the bike. (restrictive), when it's 3000-7000 it should face up. Above 7000, it's facing down.
3000-7000(facing up) position is probably the smoothest, but facing down will give highest power.

I left it in the "free spinning position" it just kinda spins in my hand with the cables removed. Mabey next time I take the bike apart I'll completely remove all that ****.
