900rr popping noise

Hey guys, this is gonna be kinda hard to explain, but I'll try. The other day I was pulling my bike across a parking lot, and I noticed that it made a popping noise with every rotation of the back tire. I had never heard it before cause I always had my helmet on, and it wasn;t that loud. I couldn't figure out exactly where it was coming from. I didn't ride for a week or so, and when I got her out to check on the problem, it didn't make the noise anymore. Well, I rode for about two hours that day, and began riding to work again, and just a day or two ago I heard the noise again. Could this be the chain somehow? Possibly a wheel bearing? My back tire has a small amount of play in it from side to side...if a grab it and wiggle it moves back and forth just a tad, is this normal? Thanks for the help guys.

the movement of the rear from side to side is not normal, there is a washer that must be installed behind the axlenut between it(axlenut) and outer swingarm, I would check this first. if this is missing the axle wont tighten down all the way(only threaded so far). next I would look at basically the things you stated.

Check the wheel bearings, for sure. I'll bet you find a bad one.

Re: 900rr popping noise

Is what you all mentioned gonna make noise sometimes, and other times not? I'm gonna take it to the shop soon, but I'm short on cash right now. Should I not ride on it untill then, or is it something that will be okay for a couple weeks? I don't want to end up skidding across the pavement just because I wanted to ride on a broke bike...know what I mean? Thanks for the help.

Re: 900rr popping noise

check that your rear brake carrier is in the slot. Check your spacers/chain adjustment. if everything looks good, you might have a bad wheel bearing. It happens all the time if the bike sees a lot of water.

Re: 900rr popping noise

Thanks guys. So the wheel movement is not normal? It is just a slight amount of play from side to side if I hold the rest of the bike perfectly still. I guess it is in my best interest to not ride it untill I get it checked out...needs a new clutch anyway. As usual, thanks for the help.
