homemade 636 fairing stay
homemade 636 fairing stay
So after spending $250 plus shipping lets just say I wanst too impressed with the piece of scrap metal 905 sold me. It was only half, used the OEM upper part, didnt fit, was too thin, etc etc....plain and simple POS!
I nearly bought another companies untill I saw pics and was really dissapointed with the design...........
So I finally figured it out " if you want something done right you gatta do it yourself". So heres what I came up with last night I cut out all the parts and had them tack welded on the bike today, then removed it and welded the whole thing. It bolts to the headlight with 5 bolts instead of just 2, those 2 mounts get ripped off fast and Ive had luck with zip ties in the areas I used bolts.
Let me know what you guys think?

If I do sell them Id like to come in around the $300 mark, that should be reasonable because 905 is $250 and you still need the OEM guage stay. Theres only $30 Candain in material and $40 for my welder to weld it on the bike, I gave him $60 because I just walked in and he did it all right away.
Id like to crash test it before I do anything first

ever think of selling them for a lil less
i know that the 905 is a lil steep and people that need em cant exactly afford them
this way more of ur **** might sell?

Like I said I have to figure it all out Im not in the metal industry and I dont really need another job, Id be doing this more for the satifaction of making something that works because I know people need this.......If I was a welder or had a laser cutter or water jet it would help alot, hopefully I can source out all the work and come in under $300 and make it worth my while...
Another thought is MXD has told me he will be working on these soon, I have alot of respect for him and his product. Im going to be sharing any ideas I have with him in hopes he can make something nice for you guys aswell. Hes setup for this kinda stuff and its what he does, I just dont have the time to wait my 905 and OEM are trashed and + temps are just starting to roll around here.

My logic on this design came from my 03 R6, I have an aftermarket stay on it from Italy that has mounts for the stock headlight. I was stuck stunting that bike because I crashed my 636, I evetually stalled in a 12 with the stock gearing trying to creep it. The fairing got smashed on the corner but the headlight didnt so much as move, no broken headlight tabs nothing. So Im thinking the best is to have the headlight as rigid as possible.
Thats how I hope this one is if its a soft to mild hit maybe a cracked fairing, pick up some pieces and put them in your pocket. If its a really hard hit then the fairng blows up maybe even takes some of the lowers with it. But with the 905 it was shifting sideways on every hit breaking the headlight tabs instantly. Then theres nothing supporting the rest of the upper, and everything just falls apart after that .....
I'll guess I'll just have to test it

More intrest means more volume and investment and in turn a cheaper price, so if I only made 10 or so Id have no choice but to ask $250-300. Keep in mind Id have to contract everything out, not like 905 I expected alot more from them.....
I just put it out there you decide this for $250 or mine
Re: homemade 636 fairing stay
so...you're going to have $100 in one, and to make it worth while you need 3X's what the welder/farbricator gets for acually doing something? not to be a ****, but you're suppusto BEAT the comp's prices, not beat them as in HIGHER prices......

You think I dont know what your saying LOOK! at then POS 905 sold me for $250, I didnt see pics before I bought it but it was a kick in the nuts when I did see it.....How much do you think that cost to make being half the size, steel, and MIG welded? That being said IMO $250 would be reasonable for my stay, you know what I wish I didnt even have to make it Id rather have payed $350 and have one shipped to me..........
Didnt put this out there to make money or start a business, just wanted to show you guys how were getting ripped for some
stunt parts. I showed you mine and what it cost me to make, hopefully that pushes someone to step it up because everything else Ive seen form established stunt parts companies is garbage...
But if anyones interested with my "estimated" price of $250-300 PM because the more intrest I see the better, more means cheaper.
Re: homemade 636 fairing stay
And to add to that I said I payed 30$ material and $60 canadian for welding so theres really only $77.71 US in the stay, $60.44 US if I didnt tip my welder $20 CAD.....Ive been told from other welders theyd charge at least $100 for those welds also, and maybe my 905 is really platinum painted black not steel
