Fixing a steering damper

I have a toby steering damper and the main shaft has a slight bend in it.
I found a place that can get the part but has anyone ever had one apart
before? I have no idea where to even start. Here's a pic of the damper.

i'm not sure if it would be worth it to buy the replacement parts or not. however don't be scared to spend a buck or two on some clean up wipes for your keyboard.

mos def... unless it's not covered by warranty, in that case I'd just buy a rotary style damper (ie-scotts, gpr)
