Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

Does anyone have any pics or advice on how I should go about fixing some cracks in a GSXR frame? I was thinking of getting some 1/4" plate aluminum and making patches and welding them over the cracks....I have 1 crack on the side by the airbox and another up at the neck of the frame....Also is there anyehere that sells tabs for the GSXR subframes? Id like to replace the weak stock tabs before they break off...

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

best fix i have seen so far is to get a 636 or F4i...

But honestly, weld the crack, then weld a large plate over the crack. That's the best advice i can think of right now.

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

I already have a 636 this is my freinds bike who even after all these problems (blown motor, cracked frame) still thinks GSXR's are the best Funny thing is this bike has only been lowsided once 2 years ago and the cracks just show up now...... POS if you ask me 636 barrel rolled on the highway and the frame is still straight as an arrow :YEAH

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

mines gotem right on the the goose neck welds by the radiator mount, my buddies dads some kinda master welder for a nascar team, he said just weld them up....if they show agian then plate it...on the sub he told me to let it break so he knows exactly where it weak at...I didnt wanna hear that so I took a peice of 1/4in thick 1in wide and hooked it to the rear peg ( you gotta fab a mount to both holes )and ran it down to the fronts to give another friction point, welded a bar between the 2 and I havent broke the tabs yet... but I trashed the sub took me almost a year ...and I know that it gave me a few extra whacks :YEAH I love whacks.....wish I could show ya work good me rickey we've done it to everbodys afterwards...good luck

damm I need to get a friggin camera

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

i've seen a few people put the bars going from the frame to the subframe.
is that cuz the tabs on the frame like to break? or the tabs on the subframe like to break? cuz i havent had any problems like that yet and i beat the hell outta mine.

the tabs that the subframe bolts to break.

for the frame fix- its from setting the bike down too hard. to fix it, weld it, then plate it. it will probly still crack, but it will keep him riding a little longer.

and the holes for the radiator shield need to be filled too. i think thats where the problems first start.

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

..Make Sure your welder TIGS it for more strength/penetration. I cracked my frame on my 929--We layed about 3 or 4 beads of weld on top of each other--A few passes will be stronger than original but that just means it could move the crack later on down the road....The weld in the pics I just posted up has gone through sooo many hard *** falls from 12 I can't even count--

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

the best way to weld that 929 type crack is to grind that crack to deep V-shape This way you get the first weld to almoust full penetration. then fill the V-shape up.

Re: Fixing cracks in GSXR frame

drill holes above and below the crack and give it zip tie stitches. that will make it the strongest...
