Wheelie Machine- Need ideas
Wheelie Machine- Need ideas
We're working on building a stationary trainer. We've got some rollers built & know how we're going to secure the bike, but it seems like there needs to be some rolling resistance to be able to get the bike up. We've thought about adding a brake rotor & caliper...but that doesn't seem to be an ideal solution due to brake fade & other issues.
Any ideas?
Any ideas?
Re: Wheelie Machine- Need ideas
yeah, a few people have made them and I think they all used a dyno drum. Then straps on the front keeping it from going behind 12, and the front wheel lands on a trampoline of sorts or something so that fork seals don't blow
Re: Wheelie Machine- Need ideas
I dont like this idea, sort of cheapens what we've all worked so hard for. Road rash thousands of dollars in bike parts, now kids can just learn on a machine...not hating or anything just thinking out loud

First of all you have to rev them higher and drop the clutch SOO hard just to get it to come up, that if you did it like that on the streets, you'd be pulling a Kyle woods from Stuntwars a few years ago (for those of you who do not know what im talkin about, kyle had the bike near the limiter and something happend to the clutch, flip straight over, missing the bar, and landed right on him)!!!
secondly it doesn't react ANYTHING like what a real bike does during the wheelie, there is not enough rolling resistance to be realistic!
Thirdly, there is no side-to-side balance needed, believe me, you can be a suppastar on a wheelie machine and you'll still SUCK in real life! LOL they will still go thru the pains we went thru!!!
With a few mods to make it have more rolling resistance, it would be a nice tool for someone who already knows how to stunt well to try new things... and it's also nice for what most guys that own one use it for, to take it to shows, and let people who DON'T wheelie experience the thrill of lofting the front wheel!
Technology will continue to make things safer and easier, and learing to stunt is already 10 times easier that what it was 4-5 years ago, but that's how things go! All you OG's out there, be proud of what you went thru and how early you learned to stunt!

dude, im building one of these ****ers too. my boss was throwing away an old automotive dyno and ive got 4 heavy automotive dynos. its gonna be dope.
like John says, rolling resistance is key, you want a LOT of resistance when you clutch it to the balance point, but you also want zero resistance when you hold it at the balance point, and you want forward propelling resistance when your dead vertical so you can slow the wheelie down with the rear brake like when your riding on the street.
Ive done a ton of math on this, just google 'rotational inertia". You need a SHITLOAD of rolling mass to come even close to simulating a wheelie. 800 lbs minimum at 1 meter diameter. Since its totally unpractical to build a 800lb dyno, I'm gonna have 2 remotely spinning dynos driven at 3x the speed of the main dynos, so I can have 800lbs of spinning weight with 3 little 90lb rollers.

But after all is said and done, ill will be just like riding a quad.

oh yea and the axle is custom
Re: Wheelie Machine- Need ideas
stop being pu**ys and buy a beat up bike those machines might teach you how to some what wheelie but they are nothing like the real thing. ya you might be able to do a wheelie on one of them but how fast are you going exsactly 0 mph. think about it there is also the mental aspect of it lets say you learn on the machine and you get it down pat. but when you go to the street and you actuly can f**k your self up its a whole new ball game for the person who learned to wheelie strictly on the machine. so i say learn like we all had to fall crash bang your self up it only makes you a better rider in the long run. just my

Wheelie on the streets here = Jail time + an impounded bike+2k fine
Just trying to learn what the balance point feels like without another trip to the hospital = priceless
