Overheating...

I have a 03 F4i and my plastics are completely shot, so I have been plastic welding them and putting fur on them to cover all of the ugly weld. Everything is coming out good but I noticed that my bike is running way hotter and I think it may be because of the front fender. Is it possible that there isnt enough air getting past the fur to my radiator? My bike usually runs between 175 to 182 degrees and it is running 190 - 210 now with the fur on it. Has anyone heard anything like this when it comes to making some furrings.

I have heard that putting fur on the bike will make it run hotter, from what I have heard that an easy fix to that is wiring the fan with a toggle switch so that you can turn it on when the bike is on.

Those are normal temps for an F4i to run in the summer. The fan doesn't even turn on until about 220

when the bike is sitting it is normal... when I am driving it never gets that hot normally... in traffic 226 degrees is normal.. on the road after a few exits on the highway it usually drops to like 182 on really hot days, which is why im worried...

The fur acts like an insulation and traps the heat in. Therefore you can expect the bike to run higher temps than it did before. As long as the temp is staying below 230 I wouldn't worry about it. The temps you mentioned are still within normal operating temps.

Did U block the exit vents on the sides where your leg would be in normal riding position. What's the outside air temp?

No I cut the holes in the sides too.. I figured it out, it is definately the front fender... I rode the bike with everything else fur and no front fender on and the thing ran cool as can be, I just threw the front fender on and Im gonna have to deal with it for the moment.. I am thinking of throwing a toggle switch on my fan so I can use it whenever I want...

Unless someone knows of a way to set it so the fan doesnt come on at like 220 degrees.. maybe more like 200? Because the bike actually runs all right as long as it doesnt get too hot... but once I sit in traffic and it gets hot it doesnt really go down very much, it stays over 200

thanks guys by the way, appreciate the input

And the temp is like 70 at night to 85 during the day

Must be the way the air slips over the fender and into the rad, the fur is spoiling the effect. I don't know if you can get a switch set at a diffrent temp for the fan but you can put a toggle 4 sure, shouldn't be hard at all. Just find the thermal switch that turns the fan on and unplug it hook on wires to your toggle. Good luck and glad you found the prob!

i furred my bike but didnt fur the front fender yet but i wou;d be sitting in traffic and my **** would get hott but if you can get one th side of the road and roll along with out the moving the clutch and getting some air in there it will cool down a bit

Word, just add a toggle to your bike. Its better that way. Don't mess with the temp sensor, that will just create problems.

The toggle should only take you 15 minutes, tops. Find which wire grounds out to turn the fans on and tap into it. I always solder my connections but do as you will.

I wouldn't worry about it oil vecocity doesn't start really breaking down until 235-240 and if you run full synthetic oil your talking 250-260 degrees. dangerous levels for these bikes are about 250 and up in which case you really got a problem but on a hot summer day my 954 will get to like 225 in traffic.
