Frame stamping

Where or How can I get a blank frame stamped?

My stuation: I have this katana that Im probably selling the motor out of. A katana frame is almost worthless, even with a clean title. On the other side of my garage I have an F3 frame without numbers. The vin isnt ground off or anything, it just never had a vin to begin with, it was a replacement part from Honda. I love the scrape bar on this frame, and Id really like to get it back into rotation and ditch one of my F2s. So I'd like to stamp the vin from my katana onto it and make it semi street legal.

Re: Frame stamping

You can buy the stamping kit at some auto/industrial supply stores. I know here in Canada theres a store called Princess auto that sells the kit numbers and letters with the jig to hold them for stamping for 40$. They have different sizes and they are measured by hight of the letters.

You simply arrange the VIN you want in the jig position it where you want it stamped and give it a good wack.

Just good luck with that through the DMV if you ever sell it.

Re: Frame stamping

I asked Cycle World (Local dealership) what happens when they replace a frame. They have the stamps and just hammer it in.

And why would the DMV ever see your VIN number?? The only one that sees you bike is you and the mechanic that certifies it.

If you want an original look, maybe a jeweler or engaving place will engrave it to look original.

Re: Frame stamping

Your bike has to go through the DMV if it's ever registered in another state. They check your vin, and your engine numbers. If anything looks like it's been tampered with they run the Forensic VIN verification test on it.

This is all to the best of my knowledge. please let me know if I'm wrong.

Not in Michigan. They just go by paper work. They don't ever look at the bike.

you are correct....they even impound the bike to do it....even if it turns up clean you have to pay...my friend bought a motor from another state and had to do it and when the 2 #s didnt match up thats what happened...

anyways i had a hell of a time trying to find this same thing out...for my 00 r1...the dealership ended up cutting out the vin # off the old frame and giving it to me.....i just carry it in the truck...its a race bike anyways so *** it.

I dont think they go that far in NY. As far as I know the only time they see the actual bike is if your getting a salvage bike inspected to be street legal. Cops look at it though. But mine wont look tampered with cause there was never a vin there to begin with.

Re: Frame stamping

I thought you were supposed to get a tag from the DMV to rivet to the new frame. Other than that, If you don't know anyone that works for a body shop or manufacturing plant that has stamps good luck in finding a set. I hear they're pretty expensive.

I also thought that all factory frames had numbers, even the ones they sell just as frames come with a title and engine number...........

It came with a sticker on it, with the vin of the bike it was supposed to replace. Just a sticker.

ahh, yes yes. Take it to the DMV, they'll give you a metal tag to rivet on the frame. Or go with your origanal plan and stamp that *****! No stamping job is ever perfect, all the letters usally very in stamp depth and are even crooked sometimes. Just make sure if you stamp it to only hit each letter once!

Re: Frame stamping

Thats a sticky subject in California.....they don't play with you when it comes to that kinda stuff. If the VIN looks tampered with at all, say bye bye to your bike.

Your Honda frame has never had numbers, so in your case it wouldn't really matter if you stamp the Kitana numbers in it, even if you were from Cali. I'd do it!

Re: Frame stamping

If you keep your receipts you won't gave a big problem since you bought the frame from Honda and they keep records. Call your local DMV for the procedures on getting the new frame put in your name.

Re: Frame stamping

Mike you're nuts to post this on here...but I know you so the bike is prob legit. I would just go to a tool store and buy stamps the right size and stamp it. In NY no one ever looks at the bike unless you get a cop that wants to check #'s and since most vins aren't stamped perfect They'll never know.

from what i have seen and talked to people about, the factory stamps them in relatively the same as a person would, but dont hit the stamp repeatedly, just one good, and i mean good wack, get some aluminum to practice on if you think you might mess up.
