the bike is leaking oil through the bolt to change the oil. i tried tightening it but it wouldnt tighten, so im assuming that it is stripped threads. how do i fix it and what method should i go about using because i just changed my oil a little over 100 miles ago?

You should spluge a 1$ on a drain plug washer every oil change to prevent this. If its just the chrush washer change it and you shold be fine, if you stripped the oil pan remove it and have a Heli-coil installed.

 

The best way would be to have a machine shop retap the threads on the oilpan. More than likely this would involve removing the oil pan, taking it to a shop and having them use a tap and die kit to basically rethread your oilpan as well as clean up the threads on your oil drain plug. To do this however you will end up draining all of your new oil.

If you dont want to do that there are other ways however I would not recommend them. There are oversized drain plugs that are self tapping. Basically you crank them in and they rethread the oil pan. There is a smaller drain plug in the center and you pull that smaller one when you want to drain the oil. These are normally used on cars, but I assume it could be used on a bike.

Second alternative is what is known as a butterfly drain plug. Basically the drain plug has a long skinny bolt with a pivoting collar on it. Think of a t. When you tighten the bolt clockwise the collar moves towards the head of the bolt and it tightens against the hole.

Another option is to try and ghetto rig something with permatex or silicone sealer.

All of these options will require draining your new oil.

This is what we used at jiffy spluge and many other oil change places when I worked there many a years ago. These were done on cars but the same things should be available for bikes I would think. If not I am sure you could go buy one from your local oil change place. The items are purchased from sos metal at all the locations. I have never seen another distributor used for drain plugs and such at an oil change place.

Agreed, don't over tighten the drain plug that washer is a crush washer and won't seal properly if already crushed. No biggy

Some plain washers used mainly by Honda and Kawi can most times be used more than once without a problem. Yamaha and Suzuki use crush washers that never seal properly after 1 use, and usually cause people to over tighten and strip the oil pan.

No problem not many people know that you shouldnt use those type of DPG's twice, its not worth the possible leak. I tell my friends all the time your buying oil and a filter dont forget the DPG they ask "do I really need it?" Its a ****n dollar and if your current one doesnt seal you just wasted 4L of oil.

 

just stand it up on 12 pull out the plug and silicone the crap out of it.let stand over nite (in a 12v) and no more leaks!

Yeah those crush gaskets suck. Get the viton gaskets metal with a rubber center. Those things rule.

I thought however in your first post you said the drain plug would not tighten and you thought the threads were stripped. So were they or was it the gasket only?
