905 Cage Install on 900RR - HELP!
905 Cage Install on 900RR - HELP!
I got a 905 cage for my 900RR, and I'm having a bit of trouble with the install.
The rear of the cage uses the rear motor mount bolt as it's main mounting point. The factory bolt is supposed to go through the cage, through it's original mounting position (all the way through the motor and out the other side of the bike) and then thread into the right side piece of the cage. There was a little nut that the bolt originally ran into, but now the threaded cage replaces that.
Well, when I put the bolt through the cage, and then through the motor, the head of the bolt is JUST FLUSH with the opening on the other side of the bike. There needs to be about 1/4" of thread sticking out to screw it into the ride side of the cage.
The bolt is metric, so neither Lowe's or Home Depot carry a long enough metric lag bolt. And it's gotta be the proper thread size so that it screws into the pre-drilled/tapped cage.
So, has anyone else run into this? If so, what was your solution.
I left a message with Aaron from Racing 905, but he's out of the office until Monday, and I'd like to get this straightened out by then. I'm hoping he can just send me a longer bolt.
Is there a shop/store somewhere you guys know of that carries long (12") metric lag bolts? I was thinking about buying a long threaded dowel and having a nut welded to one end to kind of make my own bolt, but I don't wanna have to mess with all that. I could tap out the cage to a standard thread size and use a bolt from Lowe's, but that's a lot of trouble too.
WHAT DO I DO???
Thanks.

slide a punch into that hole and make sure the bolt is fully seated. If that doesnt work, there was a post on this a little while ago. I think some guys found a longer bolt at a local hardware store, then i think the guy from mxd cages stepped up and had a bolt in his shop he sold to somone.

so one side of the cage is threaded already? is there a nut welded on the inside of the mount or something?
i would re tap it and use a standard. i have any bolt you need for a 3/8 16 but i dont have any metric bolts longer than 110mm.

Got it figured out...
Ended up having to use a piece of 5/16" all-thread and tapping the cage out to accept it. I used some nuts/washers and locknuts on the other end, and it seems to be holding together fine. It's not ideal, but it got me back out on the streets this weekend, so I was happy.
Thanks for the advice though guys.
