How to remove powder coating?
How to remove powder coating?
My vin is covered in powder coating and I got stopped for reckless driving. If I cannot clean off the VIN the police are going to take my bike. How can I remove the powder coating without damaging the VIN?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: How to remove powder coating?
go to the hardware store and buy a scrub wheel that will go on a drill it loos like a rubber wheel and tell them what ur trying to achive and they hook u up its easy to do and should cost much
Re: How to remove powder coating?
Its going to be very hard to get it off just that area and not damage the surrounding area. It will burn off with a torch and some elbow grease, there are also some strippers out there that will eat it off..........
Whatever you do dont take a wheel to it or any abrasive.......sure youll get the powder coat off but you'll damage the VIN.

Heres another idea if you sand the coat down to the flat surface your numbers will still be covered with coat but you'll see the numbers against the bare metal of the frame.
Re: How to remove powder coating?
the wheel im telling him to get wont damage the #'s the #'s are stamped deep enough it shouldt even bother em we used it to take off some powder coating on schwartz's **** and it took off the poweder coating and the think layer to take it to bare metal
Re: How to remove powder coating?
Place a couple layers of masking tape over the vin. Make sure the tape is on good. Take a razor and cut a clean rectangle around the vin. Peel the tape back exposing the powdercoated vin while the rest of the tape is still there. Use some of that ****.. whats it callled.. that crap people use to stip paint/powder coating to polish the lips of their wheels..
Anyways, thats how ya do it.. somebody will chime in with what it is called.

Re: How to remove powder coating?
get a paint stripper. not a thinner....it might work. use the jelly type, it works best.
you next bet is to sand blast and chemically treat your frame. call a powder coater to find out.

You're talking about Aircraft Stripper, or something like that.
I used this stuff I got at Home Depot called Dad's Stripper, or something like that. They've got several products that will work. Just get a very heavy-duty paint stripper, and brush it on over the vin numbers. Wait about 15 minutes and come back with a puddy knife. You shouldn't have too much trouble with it. I stripped my 905 cage and brake/clutch levers after a local douche bag powdercoated them NEON PINK for me instead of Red. Only took about an hour to get everything back to bare metal using that Dad's Stripper product.
Good luck.
