stop, drop and roll. FIRE STORY

so taylor and his dad and jagger and steveo painted my bike sat and it came out great. i couldn't touch it until the next day. i was like a freakin kid at christmas, and couldn't sleep. 7am sun i was off to the shop to pic it up. came home changed the oil and did alot of other little things i needed to do and then started to put it together.I COULDN'T WAIT...TWO HOURS TO RIDING!!!!!!!i put the fuel pump on and installed all the lines, then all of the sudden i heard popping noises.THEN CAME THE SMOKE, AND THEN I REALIZED HOLY **** MY GAS TANK IS ON FIRE. I JUMPED BACK BUT THEN REALIZED HEY I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE ON THIS YET. SO I FLIPPED THE TANK OFF, SCRATCHED THE SHITOUT OF IT, AND BLEW OUT THE FLAMES. WOW I THOUGHT MY HOUSE WAS GOING TO BLOW UP.
the fire came from the fuel pump, the wires melted. what would cause this?
everything was hooked up right. the only two things i can think of there was like steel wool hangingout of the bottom of the fuel pump..and i spliced a red and a green wire together up front to bypass my t.o.s.
anyone got any ideas?????????
can i re wire my fuel pump or do i need a new one?????????

Steel wool ignites and burns very well. If it is between a live wire and a ground it will burn. Perhaps there was an exposed section on a live wire. Check out the connections and make sure that the wires are properly attached as to not create arcing or shorts. After assuring that it is wired correctly I would flip on the fuel pump when it is not mounted on your bike and see if it gets abnormally hot (or smokes). If so, get rid of it. If not, I dont know why your bike started on fire. Get rid of the pump and get a new one anyways. I would keep a fire bottle nearby too.

Sorry to hear about the loss.
