Wheelie ticket help!!
Wheelie ticket help!!
A friend of mine form florida just got busted the other day for pulling a little 6 inch wheelie on his katana, he starts out, pops the clutch a little and brings it up for half a second, puts it down, and get charged with careless.
On the ticket the cop also wrote "revving engine w/wheel stands" Has anyone heard of this?
He said he didn't tell the cop anything, didn't acknowledge doing any kind of wheelie or anything, so that's gotta help. But does anyone have any advise for court?

Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
I got arrested for a wheelie once. I was as nice as I could be and treated the cop with respect. A couple of weeks later (before my court date), I called the cop and the DA and spoke to them about the ticket and explained how I knew I screwed up, but I didn't want my insurance to go up. They bargained with me down to "Improper start." No license or insurance points, but it still carried the same fine.
I've found that if you're polite, MOST of the time you can bargain with them, without having to get a lawyer. I've gotten myself out of my last 4 tickets without a lawyer, just by being polite and TALKING to the officer and/or District Attorney.
But tell your buddy that he's not getting out of the fine and my even have to pay a higher fine to keep points off his insurance.

I'm in the extract same predicament. I was 100% polite and respectful, but still got the ticket. The only # I have rightnow is the court house's. But should I call the DA or the cop first?

Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
Not true that you can't speak to the DA over the phone - I've done it. But you are right that you will USUALLY speak to the assistant DA instead - or a city solicitor (sp?) / clerk of court / etc.
Not true that you won't speak to the police officer and that they can't do anything. I've done that too. They can't change the charge, but they can put in a good word and help you bargain your way out of your original ticket. As a matter of fact, it was the police officer in one of my tickets that gave me all of the phone numbers I needed and what to tell them when I called.
You are right that the easiest and most sure way to get out of it is to hire an attorney, but that's usually fairly expensive.

2 things. First, keep it off the street. Second: Suck it up. I got 2 tickets for that ****. One was for Careless, the other for Reckless (reckless is a misdemeanor in FL). Not really much he can, bet he didn't even ask the cop if he had it on video. I'm bout to be a cop end of the month. So not much he can do there. If he wants to try to get outta the ticket, talk to the DA like everyone else said. That's about it. He was smart not to admit anything though.
Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
Plead not guilty, go to the court date, tell the prosecutor what's going on and that you have money...they'll plead you to a higher fine with no points in a second...and if you don't have the money, most courts do payment plans on any fines over $100...sucks your not in Vegas, cause Kittner would get you outta that **** hella quick...
Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
hmm, ya, I think the ticket itself is only like 115 or something, but it's 4 points on the old insurance bill.
I never knew you could ask for a bigger fine without the insurance penalties.

Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
don't get caught, and when you do make sure you earn the ticket, roll that whoolie for at least a mile if you are going to get a ticket, say you didn't see him because mirrors pointed towards ground
Re: Wheelie ticket help!!
Get the lawyer. I got a c&r for riding one about a half mile behind my buddy. He got one too of course. We both got the same lawyer and it was thrown out. I paid the lawyer for the fine and his services and it only cost $300 total. Only took about 15 minutes of my time to tell him what happened and sign a couple of papers. Lawyer up.
