the only way to weld steel to aluminum is explosion welding. i dont know exactly how the process works, but they use it for ship building. other than that, it is not possible. and i would suggest bolting a 12 bar instead of welding. if you bend the bar or the subframe, you want to be able to seperate the 2 and only replace the bad part. just my
and i have 10 years experience as a welder.

Use bolts.

Ferrous (stuff with iron content) and non ferrous metals are considered "dissimilar" and you can't weld them with conventional processes like MIG TIG stick or gas.

You can actually solder them with special low heat solder, 500 degrees is all it needs to flow, but I wouldnt trust that tensile strength when slamming that bar to the ground.

haha nice mama must be happy. mines in sociology, from a good school too. Underwater welding sounds sweet, I heard of a 60 year old guy that charged $500 an hour to weld submarine hulls for the navy.

what they said. you can weld stainless and steel together but not aluminum & steel. and the best way to weld is with a tig IMO

Re: ??'s for experienced welders

I've heard of processes to weld steel and alu. But i think all it is is to have the steel basically run over to the alu. But it's not really welding, there's no fusion, and there's no penetration, so that prolly wouldn't work.

even if the subframe was steel, i wouldn't weld it. Becuase if you mess something up, you can jsut take one part off and fix that.

just drill and bolt it, or clamp it.

hehe, I"m also gonna get into welding as a career, either by the railroad or a shipbuilding yard.

yeah, it's not even really welding, it's just sorta melting on ontop of another, no fusion, no penetration

that means it'll break off at the slightest breeze!

I am a welder. Steel and Aluminum ...I would just bolt it. Can't be welded. MIG would be stronger than TIG but Tig is cleaner looking. But only if you have a sucky welder then the MIG would look ugly.

I was told by a couple people (one reputable welder), that TIG is stronger, but it can only do about 1/8" (buttweld).

Seem's like you have been helped, haha. Brazing can be pretty strong, but I dont think strong enough. And can it even bond to aluminum? Anyways.. I am currently at Cat Brandywine for half my school day for Welding and Metal arts. My parents are supporting me 100% though, so its cool. I was close to dropping out of HS, but I guess you could say this class kinda saved me..
