Big sprockets and chain size?

Hey when you guys are putting on big sprockets +10,+20 etc etc are you guys changing the chain size to? Im going to be doing a big sprocket conversion soon and was wondering if I should get a 520 chain or stick with stock? Also where can I order longer than 120 link chains? Or do I have to put two together? Its for a 636 if that matters.

120 is usually enough unless you are going Really big, I have a 16 64 on my 929, and the 120 link was perfect didn't add didn't remove links. -Just to give ya an idea thats 21 up.

Re: Big sprockets and chain size?

How about the chain pitch? are you converting to a smaller size or is stock chain size better?

Thanks

Re: Big sprockets and chain size?

most people go with 520...mostly because it is cheaper and there are more sprocket sizes available (dirtbikes use larger sprockets and are usually 520).

Technically most 520 chains are not rated for larger cc bikes like 900's and 1000's, but lost of poeple use them anyway with no prob's. I personally use RK x-ring chain, but some of the guys on my team use really cheap 520 non-o-ring dirtbike chains and even on gsxr1000 with mad gearing, so your call.
There are expensive 520 chains available that are rated over 10,000lbs tensile strength which is plenty for any of us, but I think any decent o-ring chain is fine.

Drag racrers use 530 chain (underestandably)

also 520 is supposed to increase horsepower due to less weight, friction, and rotational mass.
