Lets talk rubber
Lets talk rubber
Before the flaming begins i used the search and all i got was just a bunch of trash.. and it allways seems to end up in to a stoppie front tire thread
Anyway.. lets talk tires.. I know i know another tire thread but .. rea tires .. you guys using stock size? going one size over? whats your fave tire and WHY? mulit compounds? harder compound? soft? whats your tire of choice. Been hearing alot about the dunlop 220 and some mentioning the Avon storm.
How is stability on your tires. I am running a shinko raven and bumped the psi up about 2 as soon as i clutched it i about took a nasty *** spill.. You like high contour tires or a more flat midsection with steep sides?
any info would be great.

Re: Lets talk rubber
I ran Shinko Advanced (and I caught hell for it EVERYDAY) but it was sticky. I ran a 200 on the back and stock size in the front. It gripped well and had a faltter midsection than race tires so I could run a higher psi and still get the same results of lowering the air pressure. Also, it was cheap which is always nice.

Re: Lets talk rubber
I'm not rocking anything stunt-wise now. I never had circles down, but circles have been done on MY bike with THAT setup. Narrower the better for circles thoguh....
Re: Lets talk rubber
lol, Nah I usually run stock size 180 55 zr17 pirelli diablo race take offs or 190's. But I buy em used an they work great all around. I used to have yellow tomohawks. I strongly do not recomend them for anything other than show purpose, the fronts tend to get a bubble alot of the time, an they are super super soft they grip better than superglues for the first 2-3k miles then they act like ICE an do not even consider riding in the rain or metzler sportec m3 on sale baby. I don't like to pay more than 100 bucks for my tire mounted an all done. But i always use NEW for the front. I fear no plugged tire on the rear. or patched.
Re: Lets talk rubber
You know how people say "never use a used rubber" well f*** them.
I'll take anything that fits, change-over tires FTW (usually local shops are owned or managed by racers, talk to them about their change-over tires for a cheaper prices) Just check the tires for dead-spots and over usage.
But if I could pick my tires out, I do like Michelin Pilot Powers - sticky-er than some of my used "rubbers" haha (pun intended)
IMHO, if your still practicing on wheelie's (like i am) you will be using the center strip (which change-overs are usually untouched on that part because of the knee-draggers). Just my

Re: Lets talk rubber
just drop your PSI when stunting (especially for side to side control**). Mine is street legal with change-overs and i just take some out of the rear when i'm at a parking lot. Like i said, it's seriously personal preference but tires are f***ing expensive and if you can save some $$$, it's nice to put it into other ****. I pick pilot powers (when i can get them) because it's still fun to do twisties once in awhile (and the sides are sticky as ****)
all i can say is dont go with diablos - got them stock on my 06 CBR 1krr, doesn't like to stick to the road.

**Tires: When doing high-speed wheelies make sure you have a good rear tire. A tire with a flat spot in the middle can cause wobbles. I learned wheelies on a rear tire that was almost down to the cords in the middle, and it would often wobble like crazy when doing balance point wheelies. A new tire almost completely eliminated that problem. Run the tire pressure lower than stock. For doing wheelies above 20 mph, have the tire pressure between 20 and 30psi. For doing wheelies slower than 20 mph, lower the pressure to between 12 and 20. 18-20 psi makes for a good all around psi. Lower tire pressure makes the wheelie more stable from side to side.
Re: Lets talk rubber
Im mainly looking for a tire that has a consisten curve from center to the out side. I noticed the Pilot Powers are very very high in the middle and got a steep angle to the out side. I am looking for something more prograssive then aggressive angles. Im not learning wheelies i am learning circles, Street wheelies arent a problem at all. The the tire i am running now (imagine if you will) is like a U in the certer and flairs back out kinda like a hour glass figure. its weird i never seen a tire do this. but any way been having alot of people telling me the Dunlap tires are the way to go.
