R6 subframe question.

Does anyone know what series aluminum the subframe of an 01 R6 is? I want to strengthen my subframe and before I do any welding on it I figured I would ask to see if anyone knows. And what does everyone reccomend doing to strengthen subframes?

Re: R6 subframe question.

take it to an experienced aluminum welder and just put braces all over it . or get steel or aluminum strips and run them from the bottom subframe bolt to the bolt for your 12 bar or the passenger rearset bolt thats closest.

Re: R6 subframe question.

Im a welder and to weld aluminum you have to know what series it is to choose the right filler metal. But Ill take the 12 bar positioning into consideration thanks.

I cant afford a new one and I like this one too much.

Re: R6 subframe question.

I don't know what it's made of, and I've never broken mine, but I have welded plenty of other people's subframes and 4043 works for me. I've heard a lot of sh*t about the r6 subframe, but from what I've seen, it has held up better than anyone else's. Haven't done anything to reinforce mine and it's still going strong.

Re: R6 subframe question.

well, since its cast garbage, the "closest" you could clasify it is 5051.

as a welder you should also know that welding cast weakens it, so choose your points to weld, and just how much you brace it into considoration.

You're right, welding cast does weaken it, but an 01 r6 subframe is not cast.

are you sure? 01 uses the same as an 03, and that was def cast.

Wrong, the 01 does not use the same as the 03. The 03 is a completely new bike. One major difference is that in 03 yamaha started using die casting on the entire frame and swingarm. It’s called controlled filling die casting.

I'm trying to find out from yamaha the exact series they used. I might have an answer for you later.

Abuse.....haha, it's taken everyting I've got. An 80 mph loop, a buick, a high side, and all those parking lot wrecks that occur daily.

Re: R6 subframe question.

Blah, apparently yamaha doesn't even know what it's made out of, besides aluminum (thanks for that). Proprietary information my ***. Ridiculous. Anyway, 4043 works well for me, but if anyone is able to find something out, post it up.

Re: R6 subframe question.

99-02 sub's are strong... just make sure u cut down the rearset pegs and take out the centering bolts on the clip-ons, and get aftermarket clip-ons
