once you get good you can keep powering it up like that, or you can clutch it up. i think powering is easier and safer to learn. its how i learned second gear, but some people will argue to the death that clutch is only way to go.
just takes practice. go ahead and ride in 2nd to around 45, shut the throttle, and at same time, crack it wide open and pull up. you'll have plenty of time to adjust throttle once it comes up.

Anyway....stand up and lean back. When i was learning these i had to actually touch the back of my leg to the rear seat, get going about 30-45 mph, slip clutch, gas gas, but stay leaned back till she came up to about 75% height then roll of a little and cover brake till BP. Then just use throttle control and brake. If you dont have brake skills, I wouldnt advise 2nd gear, stick to 1st, but many many people have learned 2nd gear without brake.
I just think its safer with brake. My
.For me, when learning, if I didnt committ to leaning back it never really came up but once i fully committed to leaning back it was nothing. Now I dont even lean back, its just hella clutch and a gang of gas.
1999 f4 is carbed so you might have to be more in the power band then FI (mine was 03 gsxr6) and really slip that clutch.
Another note: if your not in BP and keeping a constant speed in 1st or better yet, slowing it down a little, then stick to 1st gear. Whats the rush? Then once you got 1st on lock it will be nothing in 2nd. Just a little practice and its the same as 1st.
Practice practice practice. good luck.

Holy Crap.....don't u know anything, clutching it is the only way to go.

Go about 80 mph then lean back and powpowpower it up!

There are few different ways to get 2nd up. Practice and find whats most comfortable for you.
What works for me is stand staggard going anywhere between 35-55 mph. I give it a little bounce and slip the clutch as the bikes comming back up and lean back a little. Comes up nice and smooth and because your bouncing and clutch your rpms won't be to high.
Just remember to cover the rear brake and be carful not to pull up on the bars when you bounce it. Just bounce it and let the bike come up on it's own.
Another thing you could do is practice the motion of bouncing and slipping the clutch when the bike is on a stand. This might sound kinda gay but if you practice the motion a couple of times and then take it out on the road you'll probably get it right away.
Read the advice on this site and do what ever works best for you, just don't powwwwa it up.
Good luck!

Re: Second gear wheelies
Thanks for the advice im hoping i will get a chance to try it tomorrow. I appreciate the fact that you actually gave me advice rather than just dismissing it. :YEAH
Re: Second gear wheelies
Clutch it up in first, stand staggard, cover the rear brake, practice, practice, practice then practice some more.
The r1 will rock wheelies no problem just start out small and work your way up.
My opinion is don't try to learn in second if you are just learning you don't want to be going that fast. Some people will tell you that you should learn in second because it isn't as twitchy as first, this is true, but in order to wheelie good you need to learn good throttle control. Once you get first gear bp wheelies down 2nd and third will be cake.
