Wobbles & Death Shakes
Hey guys. Wondering if you have some ideas on why this happens.
I'm having some wobbling issues when riding long wheelies on my bike.
Here's what happens.....
I pick it up....in 2nd or 3rd gear....Depending on the gear that's around 70-100. Once I bring it up I normally have to adjust my line a bit to be sure I'm heading straight....that normally only takes a few seconds. After it's heading in the direction it should, it's smooth sailing UNTIL I hit somewhere between 1/2 mile - 3/4 mile, and then the bike starts to wobble, or sway, or shake, or whatever you want to call it. Basically it kind of goes into a mid wheelie death shake of some sort.
It's still heading in a perfectly straight line, wasn't caused by bumps, wasn't caused by wind, and wasn't caused by anything crazy that I'm doing (that I can see anyway).
It sucks because I can't do anything about it. I've tried holding onto the bike better in a wheelie....with my knees, keeping my arms and legs locked, you name it. I can't prevent it from happening, and I can't stop it from happening once it's started. It sometimes eases up a bit (never stops), and I can safely set it back down....but other times it continues to get worse, to the point in which I don't have really any other choice to set it back down and hope for the best. When it's really bad it results in a death shake once I touch back down. I pin the throttle sit back, and do all I can to ride it out. Luckily so far it's only been that severe a couple of times, however it's only a matter of time until something bad happens....I'm guessing.
Any ideas?
I would think it's the bike, but like I said, the front end is in the air for quite a while before it actually starts shaking. At least a 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile, where it is perfectly fine, then suddenly it hits. At first I thought it was the road, or the wind, but it's happened several times now in different areas, and in different conditions where I know its not those things.
My bike is 100% street, not stunt....and my tire pressure is at 30+lbs (whatever factory is). Should I lower it? There are a lot of twisties where I live so i wanted to keep it stock, but if it's safe to lower it then I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Wobbles & Death Shakes
deff lower your tire pressure, your probably over 40psi right now. If it does wobble bad don't try and throttle through it after you have set it down. Make sure your not doing anything jerkey with the throttle. Most important just slow down.. Good luck

I am not an expert, but I do know good wheelies from bad wheelies...I've have plenty of bad ones....but the ones these do it on are good.
I'll try lowering my PSI tomorrow guys...thanks for the tips.

Re: Wobbles & Death Shakes
man i had the same problem i ride a f4i, i lowered tire pressure, highered tire pressure, nothing work adjusted body position in air, nada, for one thing you should learn to slow the wheelie down i would get the wobbles when i would get over 50mph, and get a sterring damper it will save your *** one day trust me. anyway bought a good rear tire, stop doing burn outs, wobble stopped. if your going to do highway wheelies at high speeds your rear tire has a lot to do with it. parkig lot stunts whole diffrent story, if you dont get a new tire or a streeing damper beter learn to slow em down to about 25 or 30 mph.
Re: Wobbles & Death Shakes
70-100? that's the problem.
and yes, like someone said you probably aren't high enough. whenever my bike starts to get a little shaky i pull it higher past bp then use the brake to bring it back down and bam, goes away. this happens when i go over bridges.
also, your psi is super high in a stock tire. run like 25psi or so, still good for the street and helps a bunch on the wheelies. and slow that **** down, high speed is easier to get a bad wobble. just cuase you think the road is smooth doesn't mean it's smooth to a tire thats spinning a mach 1 when you're doing a 100mph wheelie.
