Oil pick up

Wats the deal fellas wit the oil pick up. I ride Gix750 and dont have it. But of course ihve heard all the war stories. But I also heard its a over played myth. I watched 2 friends wheelie 4 about 2 miles when they put it down one shot out white smoke the other didnt. Guess which 1 didnt the 1 without pick up. Can some1 tell me Y. Please just tryin to get to the bottom of it.

Re: Oil pick up

i never had one in any of my gsxr just run the oil to the top of the sight glass plus alittle. two things that will kill a gsxr rev limiter when the temp gauge is flashing i blew 2 that way and high rpms down the highway for miles. keep the r's down on the long wheelies and it will last forever. just my 2 cents

Re: Oil pick up

it's probably because the guy with the oil pickup is also running more oil than the guy without the pickup. when you've got more oil in your oil pan your crank is spinning in more oil and whipping it up, making it froth like a cappucino. the froth gets blown/sucked out the crankcase breather tube into the airbox = smoke. that said, I would rather see white smoke than a red oil light.

so the solution is to either A) run less oil or B) keep the revs down.
running less oil will make the oil less likely to froth, but it's no guarantee, and you run the risk of seeing the oil light(worse)..... to keep the revs down you have to learn to go slightly past bp, so you can slow the bike down.

another think that will kill a gixxer is hitting rev-limiter with a lot of oil in the bike...again because the crank is having to spin in more oil, putting more stress on the crank. you may not think of oil as putting stress on the crank but when the crank is spinning at those speeds it does.... gixxers don't take as kindly to overfilling as hondas because their cranks/ journals / cases are not built as tough.

Re: Oil pick up

I'm at top of the glass with no pick-up. Wheelie for miles and in the lots for hours. Never had a problem yet. 23,000 on it now.

Re: Oil pick up

Take it from me the 80 dollar pick up is well worth the insurance of a 1000 dollar engine. But I also think it has a lot to do with just luck of the draw. I have not put one in my sixxer yet but am very soon. I am now doing slow stuff have rode a lot of fast long wheelies 15k on it.. I Give it h*** and have been on the rev limiter a lot during coaster and stuff and never have had a problem. One of the boys in my crew with a 7fitty is on his 3rd engine in 10k. He never overrevs it and only rides interstate wheelies, and endos. no slow stuff, nothing in 1st gear, keeps the revs down. So I dunno but 80 bucks is worth it for me... pull your pan and tell me how you don't justify installing one.
