denting tank problems

I have an 04 R6 and I want to dent the tank but the fuel cap is so far back and the air box is so tall under the tank I am kinda scared to just go to town with a mallet. Are there any secrets or tips that I should know about before I beat it in? I am sure there was info about this on here before but I searched and found nothing....Any help would be greatly appreciated

dont be skerred. I put a few rags down and used a small sledge on top of a phone book, I didnt do a picture perfect job, but it doesnt leak, and its way better.

Re: denting tank problems

park the bike in the garage hold on to the rafters and stomp down on the center of the tank with some work boots on thats how I did mine! Then just worked out a perfect seat with a rubber mallet!

Re: denting tank problems

just be easy on the gas cap hinges, they love to bust,
and then it will kinda sit crooked on there but it looks like it will hold up just fine, and you get gas all over your gut

Re: denting tank problems

your not going to be able to go too deep on an r6 tank..youll be able to go decently wide, but not deep, due to the airbox.

start at the rear of the cap, and work out from there...but take your time..

Or just jump on it once with a good pair of boots on LOL

thats how to do it right there. start at the end of the cap & gradually work your way out towards the edges.

had that happen to my bike too. the only problem is if you take off the cap you may dent the tank so the holes dont line up again for the cap. i just got a vortex cap & it fixed the problem.
