Anyone reload their own rounds? Rifle, pistol or shotgun? Thnking abouttaking it up as a new winter hobby.

 

I used to reload for my .270 a couple years back. I enjoyed it at first, but got tired of it pretty quick. It was interesting trying all the different loads though and seeing how they shot. In the end I went back to just buying ammo and gave all the equipment to my buddy.

 

I reload empty CO2 cartridges with FFF powder and 6" of cannon fuse

 

I'm 1/2 in it just to save $.

I hear you need to hot glue the fuse in place......from a friend.

No I don't remember. Probably because I had no interest at the time. Go over your set up and what not. Trying to learn soem **** before my books show up in the mail.

 

i can't remember whaat loader model i have...but it's a single station which means you have to pull the handle for every step

1. punch out the primer
2. new primer
3. pre measured powder load
4. puts in the wad and crimps it

for rifle shells it's only 3 steps

but after a couple days or so you get pretty good and fast at it

 

That sucks. I'm definately going to get a progressive press.

I's an economics thing. If I go to the range I drop $100 on factory ammo so I don't go much because I know I have to buy ammo. If I buy the materials up front and make the **** and having it sitting at home I will go to the rage because all I have to pay is the $10 rage fee.

that is true but do the math man you have to reload alot of rounds to make a $400 reloader pay...taht's why i bought a cheap one. but you are a numbers guy so im sure you have already done the math

 

It will pay for itself in about 500 defensive rounds or in about 1000 practice rounds. After the first round of firings it gets a lot cheaper because brass is about 1/2 the cost of a round.

You can find setups pretty cheap on craigslist. I found a shotgun set up that would retail for $1000 for $225.

Im about to get into it pretty heavy. My dad has always hand loaded our rounds for just about all of our rifles. With the prices of ammo now you almost have to reload to be able to afford shooting anymore. I bought 100 new brass for .270 win and it was like $30. a pound of powder is $22, so if you shoot enough its def. worth it.

I recommend buying the Hornady reloading manuel and reading it like 3 times.....thats what my dad made me do.

 

I just got the ABC's of reloading and started reading it last night. I have Lyman's 48th edition on the way as well. The brass is 1/2 the cost of a round. From looking around it seems like midway has the best prices.

 

I got most of my stuff from Cabelas....not saying they are the cheapest but being 5 miles from my house they are definatly closer. Havent heard of the ABC's of reloading but that Hornady book is the ****. I think I paid like $25 for it.....def money well spent.:YEAH
