Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Started using my HB now, it was working fine, stepped up to SS'er whilst wheelying along and moved onto the HB (this was at idle sorta speed) but the brake locked up and didn't do anything, I stepped off the back and bike went flying

Since that it felt solid but didn't do anything... I've now re-bled it all and re-fixed the fluid res and it seems to be working okay now, but it creaks from the rear brake cylinder when I pull the lever? it doesn't creak when I use foot brake, but does on handbrake - although it seems to be working fine now?

Oh and I didn't go for HB and rear brake at the same time, that wasn't the problem.

Also, how do people have their handbrake and clutch set up? any chance of some pictures??

I've been struggling to use the clutch and HB at the same time as I can't pull the clutch in as it hits my fingers holding the HB... I've now moved it to what seems really comfortable, just need to grind a bit off the clutch lever to make it fit properly... I know this sorta thing is what works for 1 person doesn't for another etc.. but any chance of people posting their set ups? want to see how you lot have them. I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

my adapter has been creeking since i put it in,don't sweat it...

clutch on top and closer to the out side, brake on the bottom and closer to the tripple i have just enough room for one finger on the brake and the clutch is as far down as i can get it ....

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Thats weird as I have it the complete opposite.. the clutch is nearer the triple and the brake is all the way out towards the end of bars.. I use my first finger (next to thumb ) to work the clutch and next two on the brake.. nothing gets in the way this way, but the brake is quite a bit out from the clutch, hard to explain but I'll post a pic tomorow.. my thought is I can clutch with 1/2 fingers then just slide off the clutch onto the HB easily, and use 1 finger on clutch if need be..

you two must use your 2nd finger on the clutch and first on the hb? else surely having it that way around your fingers would hit when you pull clutch?

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

and having your brake in all the way towards the tripple gives you more room to grab the brake at the end of the lever,in turn giving you more leverage on the brake

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Exactly... as he stated...

You get more leverage with the HB inside by the tripple.. and I like the clutch on top so it can be used with my index finger..

SF's and a few other guys I know run there HB's up top. It works for them, but I would never get used to the clutch like that.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Like this, only this is a temporary fit, it needs to angle up a bit more yet.. but you get the idea.. I haven't ridden with it like this yet but it feels loads better so far.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

this way is fine as long as you are taking your finger off the clutch and using two fingers on the brake..

but if you put your brake on the inside and have a longer brake lever then you will have way more leverage on the brake and you can always keep your index finger on the clutch and work the brake with one finger

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Yep I take fingers off the clutch normally, its just wanted to try merk stall things and struggled to hold clutch in and hb at same time.. I think this way should do okay but wasn't quite sure. I think I can do 1 finger clutch and 1 on brake like this whilst at a standstill (merk stall) but think it might be difficult to slip clutch whilst wheelying ss'ers etc as i might not get enough pressure due to lever position...

I guess i'll just see how this goes and if need be I'll get a longer lever and put brake on other side of clutch as you say roger.

Cheers.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

I have my c;utch to the inside, it works best for me that way. i can have my middle finger half way up my brake leaver and still work it fine.
I have no problem work both together now with this way of set up. Just try it all differet ways to see witch is best for you.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Hi Lee, I re-done mine this morning and its exactly the same as yours, well, my fingers on the HB are a bit closer to the master, but I don't have a radial so can't move the clutch any closer like on yours.

I just rode down the road at 30mph, pulled clutch in and managed to lock the rear wheel with the HB with clutch in.. so I think this set up is fairly good.. can't wait to try it out on the back wheel :YEAH

I need to get a radial like yours then it'll fit up better.. but this'll have to do for the time being.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

sparks pull your res up and over the top of the bars facing forwards with the outlet facing down that is probably why you got airlocked. basically you want it the right way up when you are at balance point but still slightly higher than the master so it will be fed still. I have a super duper adjustable ratio hb and it works very well like that never air locks.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

ahhh that makes sense as the res is under the lever!! I'll move it above, hopefully that'll stop it happening again, cheers toby.

Re: Handbrake set up and creaking..?

Ok it's finished now.. moved the res higher than the lever and it should be fine when bike is at whatever angle. I hope...

Also hit it with an angle grinder and made it all fit up a lot closer, feels really nice like this. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow. :YEAH
