400ex handbrake?

Well i went to buy a second z250 today. To my suprise the dealer had a 2002 Honda 400ex for the same price as a z250. So now i'm the proud owner of a yellow 400ex. Now I know that alot of people don't like handbrakes but I don't care I want one. Who has done one, what is needed, how hard is it, how much did it all cost you?

Get a rear brake cable for a 4 wheel drive with hand brakes. I think I got one off a Foreman. Then get a clutch perch and lever. MSR makes some cheap ones that look ok. Then just hook it up to pull down on your stock rear brake lever.
It isn't as Bling Bling as adding a master cylinder and another caliper, but it's alot cheaper.

Re: 400ex handbrake?

LOL amazing, i had just thought of this after my first post and was crusing ebay looking for parts. So where did you mount the wire to? Right at the end of the foot of the rear brake lever? Where did you put the cable sheath (black tube on the outside)? Does it feel pretty good for you, is it easy to control?

Any pics would help alot, Jon

Re: 400ex handbrake?

Think it would be possible to use a bmx leaver and longer brake line? I could pick that stuff off cheap and have it tomorrow vs. having to wait for something off egay...

I've seen that done on stuntbike. It would be the same set-up on the wheeler. The only difference this guy did vs. Hazen's idea was that he welded an extension onto the rear master cyclinder instead of having the cable pull down the actual lever. IMO.... pulling the lever instead of the cyclinder is a stronger method. Sorry... no pics.... but I know exactly what Hazen is talking about and it's actually quite simple. Good luck.

Re: 400ex handbrake?

go into the fiddy forum... a lot of people put them on their 50's and there are detailed diagrams and pictures on how to do it. Do a search. You'll get the idea of how it's done.

Re: 400ex handbrake?

Way easier. Do this:

Get a spare purch & hook up your e-brake cable to it. When you pull the cable, it pulls your ebrake. No more calipers, no cables pulling your rear brake pedal down. Just rig up a spring to pull it back. works mint & takes 10 seconds.

I had it on my raptor back in the day - the 400ex has the nastiest balance point so you really won't use it much.
