painting a quad?
painting a quad?
has anyone had any good results painting 4 wheeler plastics? is there any type of paint that will hold up to trail abuse and pressure washers? i want to give my quad a fresh look for the summer so i was thinking about painting it all black or something simple like that. maybe add a graphics kit. ive even BREIFLY thought about doing it in colored rhino liner, but i can think of a lot of negatives on that idea. any ideas or suggestions on how to do it would be great. Pics of finished product would be nice too. I have access to any air tools or paint equipment i need, so im not talking about rattle canning it, although im not opposed to rattleing it if the results are good. let me know......
Re: painting a quad?
really?? have you done it? how does it hold up to pressure washing, or extreme temperatures? did you put a clear coat on it? and finnaly does it hold up to flexing well? im very interested in doing this. here is a pic of my quad, it shouldnt be too hard to paint it all black, what do you think about painting it all white or orange? Thanks for any help
Re: painting a quad?
i painted my last 636 like this and it worked out realy well... idk about pressure washing and i dont se why it would have to hold up to extreem temps. no i didnt put clear coat on it but it wouldnt be hard...
its gonna be just as easy to paint it any color you want...

Re: painting a quad?
A friend of mine just painted his 400ex. I put a fresh coat of clear on my 50 plastic to give it a good wet look. But we both work at a body shop and know how to prep everything and have all the right tools and chems. to get the job done right. I dont have alot of experiance using rattle can though. Automotive paint, with all the right procedures seems to work out just fine though. Good luck. The best advise I can give is to make sure you scuff or sand the plastics with some good 600 grit paper before you paint it.
Re: painting a quad?
rattle can will last 2-3 good rides through trails then flake off and peel like crazy and make a ******* mess everywhere you go. Don't even bother its not worth it at all. even prepped pretty well & using an adhesion promoter, **** just dosn't last. Thats why dirtbikes & quads come with dye colored plastics rather than painted...paint just wont take the abuse.
I've never tried the snowmobile stuff, i don't know if there is any difference. but arn't most snowmobile hoods made of fibreglass? if they arn't made of abs plastic then its apples to oranges. Different materials have different adhesion properties.

but my old mxz you could take the hood and bend it while it was up, so i really dont think it was fiberglass....i think they are made of some type of plastic.
and the paint would bend with the plastic and stay mint....not even get that little stress mark that colored plastics get.
Re: painting a quad?
How often did your sport bike hit hte ground, and bend hte plastics back 10 inches, and have the plastics go poping back into shape after you flip it back over?
Don't spray paint your ****, thats ghetto as ****... Buy plastics, or ride it how it is..

word....but i dont think snowmobile hoods are made of fiberglass, that **** would be too heavy.....maybe the older ones, i dont know..

Re: painting a quad?
I painted my old CR250 and it held up great, BUT I was a painter in a body shop and painted it with PPG and everything was prepped properly. If you rattle can your four wheeler it will look shitty and the paint will not be near as durable as a good automotive finish. Just buy plastics or leave it alone.
Krylon fusion is made for raw plastic lawn furniture not sportbikes. Your 636 had a basecoat/clearcoat finish so using that is pointless.

Re: painting a quad?
done with fusion... not bad for a rattlecan...

it was pretty durable, and some friends of mine did their fiddy plastics and they seem to be holding up pretty well...
That being said, I still would be wary of painting quad plastics...

Re: painting a quad?
prepping is the key. Ive dont krylon fusion before.. It looks ok but not near glossy enough for me. I now just stick to base coat clear coat with the right prepping.. here is a pic. House of Kolor Kandy tangerine.
