Just bought a YFZ450... questions...

Ok... This is my first quad.

I got into MX when i was five or so and decided I wanted a toy to screw off on.

I bought a 2004 YFZ450 for $3800 and been ****ing around with it. (rolled it on the street yesterday and bent the streering stem and the bars).

Now I will probly mainly use it for the dunes and some MX. But since i don't have a truck and no way to get to them alltaht often, I want to have something to do on the street when I can't get out there.

Now i can ride on two wheels pretty easy. But I cannot wheelie. I know my problem is im scared of going all the way back to the balance point, but there has got to be a way to get over this.

It bogs down low, so it is damn near immposible to do a lower RPM wheelie. And otherwise the RPMs are very high and im hauhling *** (and therefore real scared to go back to the ballence point).

Anyone have any tips? And was taht a ok price for the quad?

ummmm you could pop the clutch from a stand still to get it up without going very fast and as long as you on pavement it shouldnt come all the way over. to get over your fear put one foot in the grab bar (or both) pop the clutch and let it come all the way back(note: dont slam it on it or it may bend or break just eaz it back)and step off and you will see that it wont come over (try not to do it in sand or other soft stuff cuz it will come over) i know first hand lol

I honestly thik even if i did pop it up from a stand still... i would have to play with the clutch a ton to keep it running at that low of a RPM/speed

but i'll give her a try.. hopefully i dont kill myself..

Gearing it down will give you more engine break and slower wheelies but it will be a lot more twitch and those things are already too torquey to begin with.

Put your foot in the grab bar and cover the break with your other foot. Clutch it up easy and scrape it. You'll know how far you have to go back then too.

Also know it won't flip over on top of you, and if your not crusing in fifth you can bail off the back if need be!?!?

Re: Just bought a YFZ450... questions...

whats up bro, i too have a '04 yfz......LOVE IT! like everyone above said. do some somewhat slow foot in bars to learn b/p and brake control. put the quad in second gear, left foot in the bar, right foot covering the rear brake. start out moving really really slow, pop the clutch in second gear. what you want to do is to hear the quad hold the ''same note''. you dont want it to get louder, like its pinned, nor do you want it to soften, and bog down til it stalls. just bring it back til you hear it holding the same note and then you know your in b/p. just work your rear brake to keep it there if you feel the front coming back too far, or if its falling just give it a LITTLE BIT of throttle. also, when your using the clutch....keep all fingers on the bars EXCEPT your index and middle finger. you can use those two fingers to work the clutch aswell incase you hear it bogging down at SLLLLOW speeds. DO NOT be afraid of the quad coming back on you, it WONT. all you have to do if it DOES is swing that right foot back off the break and onto the ground, and let your other foot slide out of the grab bar......safe and sound.....now just gotta catch your quad, lol. and once you get those foot in bars, and you understand where your b/p is, and you've gotten some good brake control. start doing coasters and scraping. TRUST ME, even after doing all my stunts, i still had a slight fear of the quad being at 12oclock, wondering while im wheeling exactly how close that bar was. but trust me when i say, learing coasters and scraping will COMPLETELY diminish your fear of hitting that grab bar. hell, i've been through like 4 bars now because i cant seem to stop scraping, its alot of fun. you'll get addicted.

and i also bent my steering column a year of so ago, i've been stunt'n w/ a bent steering column, i KINDA like it better the way it is now though.

take it slow, practice makes perfect, and GET PICS! let us know how you do man, its DEFINATELY a fun quad to stunt.

Ive raced BMX and MX... i have had my fair share of broken body parts (BMX tends to do it to me more). I would feel stupid to break something going 10-25 mph trying to wheelie though. LoL.

Well im going to try and start with a complete stop and pop it up wiht my left foot on the rear bar. But first i got to wait for my new steering stem, bars, and clamps.

Once these parts in and I kinda start getting it, pics and vids will follow for some tips :YEAH

Thanks!

Why don't you practice first with your busted *** **** and then worry about fixing it. Remeber keep that left leg straight and fully extended too. It won't feel as comfortable but it will make you balance better

YES, what KUTZ said. i used to have my left knee bent doing my foot in bars till someone told me ''straighten out that leg, makes it ALOT easier'' and it DEFINATELY does. so keep that left leg straight. and yes, practice w/ it WHILE its busted. my stem is bent and i stunt the hell outta that *****, lol. also, do it from a SLOOOW roll, not a stop. from a stop you may tend to stall as your coming up since your learning. learn from a very slow roll that way the rpms are just a tad higher. then once you've learned how much gas/clutch it takes to get the quad UP to b/p from there, go for doing them at a dead stop. and dont feel dumb about busting your *** going slow, lol. when i broke my collarbone it was in a field doing doughnuts. i pussed out when i went to turn to the left and the i let off the throttle. tires BIT and 8' in the air i went, right onto my left shoulder. so dont feel dumb about slow ****ups. it'll happen, like you said......you raced BMX, you should be used to minor scrapes/bruises. be safe, have fun. GET PICS, lol.

and here are some of my best pics bro.

definetly start at a slow roll then clutch it up. with stock gearing thats the easiest way to learn.
