Catman,
the universal ones have two wires going to them, one is for power, the other is for ground. If it is bolted to the frame properly, it should work just fine without a ground... make sure the wire lead going to it is getting power... use a test light, and turn (or kick) it over... u should get a signal...
good luck!

Catman if u can wait untill tomorrow I will scan you a copy of the schematics I have for my trail boss I'm sure they are one in the same. As far as I know off the top of my head the wires on the coil go as follows. One of them is hot from the battery at all times and the other is from the ignition when the ignition switch is turned on it completes the circute of the other hot wire, the coil is grounded by a metal washer in the hole that the mounting bolt sits in. This may not be correct but can easily be tested. You may also want to check the wiring diaframe there is a **** ton of wire underneath the head light on a control board. If your voltage regulator is shot it may not be providing power to the coil. Does the reverse light on the dash or the nuteral position light work?
