Anyone ever had a engine case welded?

Apparently that kodiak i sold had a cracked case by the drain plug. The guy wants me to pay for half of a new case, but a case is $440. I want to find out of it could possibly be welded and still be as good as new? Here's a pic of the crack.

When selling a used vehicle it is important to stress the fact that you are selling it as is. Meaning any repairs discovered after purchase would be the sole responsibility of the buyer. If you sold it as is, you have nothing to worry about.

www.DroveEntertainment.com Beats for cheap

I agree. Who's to say the case was cracked when you owned it? I'd bet 5$ that this guy did an oil change and possibly cracked the case himself.

Does it leak oil now? Did it leak when you sold it to him?

It looks like a tough area to weld maybe he could fix it with a heli-coil???? Who cares its not your machine anymore :YEAH

Re: Anyone ever had a engine case welded?

It leaked when I sold it, but I thought it was the rear seal where the driveshaft goes into the transmission. He changed the seal and said it was still leaking. I don't know where the drain plug is in relation to the rear seal, but the oil could have ran back there? If it can be welded for cheap, I'd be willing to pay half. I dont want to pay for half of the case because he probably would do a cheap fix and keep the $200 or whatever. We'll see I guess. He's going to check with a welder. I wouldn't be so inclined to help out but he filed a dispute with ebay, and I really dont want to give him the money back for the quad.

His loss, "he cracked it unloading it at his house" (whos to say he didn't)

Tell him you'll take it back off of him and only return half of his money

lmao... yea, i agree with him...
and yes, it can be "welded." I had an 86 Quadsport 230 that LOVED to spit the chain off (rear axle bearings were a factory option in 86!) and it was known from time to time to double up the chain on the front sprocket and catch the side case...
My Machine Shop teacher in H.S. was able to "weld" it with some sort of welder that welds non-ferous metals (i think thats the wording, metals that are not magnetic.)
It is something that could be done, but you might need to take the engine out/apart for someone to do it. If thats the "case" (haha, im a comedian, huh?) then it might get costly.
I would explain to ebay how you informed the guy it had an oil leak and you BELIEVED it was the seal. You have spoken to a local shop who says they could fix it for 50 bucks. You'll pay the guy 50, and he'll like it, or he can get ficked... their choice, and see what they say.
Anyone has to expect when they buy something over ebay they are taking a risk. As with all "pre-owned" stuff, you are taking a risk. I would tell him to JB weld it and like it, or give it back for his money back, less a 20% re-stocking fee, all ebay fees, and a small handling fee... see what he thinks of that!

Re: Anyone ever had a engine case welded?

The guy checked with a welder and the welder said it can be done for $50 so the guy who bought it from me said he'd do that. I refunded him the money just a few minutes ago and told him that's the end of it all. period.
