sorry guys, the thread title makes it sound like i need your liver or somethin but its not that serious.

~~400ex OWNERS~~ i got a '02 mint 400ex a couple days ago. guy that sold it to me said it had been sitting for a while with the gas still turned on, and it wouldn't start. we change the plug, fires right up and runs good. i get it home, and it won't start again. change the plug and boom, she runs.

i go to start it today, and im chokin it, won't start, turn off choke, won't start. didn't mess with it too long cuz i didn't wanna foul another plug.

only mods are open air box mod, full exhaust and rev box. guy said carb had been jetted, but is it possible that jetting or carbeuration tuning is my problem?

any help is appreciated.

 

Is the plug black? I would rip the carb off and clean it out good and also clean the filter off good. if the plug is black you are running rich and fouling plugs.

 

good advice right thar, my 02 is a bit(h to start, but the choke is removed. Both of my 400 are picky about a clean plug. and flood if the gas is left on and I load and unload it that way.



Either way I would dip the carb.

but yea it IS fouling plugs, that's my problem. its like i know the first one was fouled because the quad did sit for a while with the gas on. but since then, i get it running and then i can't let it sit over night without replacing the plug to start it again.

cat, what does "dip" the carb mean? somebody else told me to try different jets or adjust the needle, could this help?

Dip = soak in cleaning solution. Something to soak the carb in to remove any varnish or build up. Letting it sit "Dipped" overnight or just for several hours really heps break everything up and clean it out better.

Have you been leaving the gas on?

The pet**** can tend to leak, and flood out the engine.

 

you could always contact a honda dealer for spare parts, or for tech. support.

ok, let me rephrase - the fuel shut off valve since it didn't like the pet(rooster) terminology.

I'd start there and call your exhaust's manufacturer to see what they recommend for jetting.

but she's been doin better these last couple days. i think maybe i just didn't need to have it choked and eventually flooded it. bought a better brand of plug for it and she's been kickin *** ever since.
