Performance on a budget: Need some advice
Performance on a budget: Need some advice
heres my case: i have a 350 raptor right now with an HMF pipe, K@N, and my DG nerf bars are coming in 2 days. i want to add some more parts on to my quad, but i am sort of pondering on what to get. i buy all my stuff with my own money, but i am on a bit of a budget right now, and want to get the most bang for my buck. i am working with around a definite $220, but could stretch to $300. my quad in a drag race against a 400EX gets beat by about another quads length. i predict my quad goes about 70-75, but top speed isnt a huge priority. i want a little more power, and quicker acceleration to mid range. heres the catch: my dad wont let me bore the quad out for certain reasons, so i am kind of wondering what to do. i dont necesarilly have to go the performance route either. i could also buy a front bumper, or perhaps build a 12bar. i already have a swingarm guard and underbelly panel, along with some graphics on the fenders and gas tank plastics.
Most of the time i stunt on hardpacked dirt, or hit mini jumps (around 5 feet tall) i occasional go through mud and water, but most of the time it is in grassy fields or asphalt and hardpacked dirt. perhaps tires would be an option, however i do not know a cheap place to buy them. rocky mountain i think is $200 for a set of rear Razrs with 20x11x9 deminsions, which is probably what would be good for me..well enough rambling on, if anyone has anyone sugestions, hit me up! i would really appreciate it
thanks!

Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
i dunno... i say get a set of tires, but what do i know... if top speed isnt a priority, you could get 18's.. more accel, less top end and less ground clearance...
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
Your intent on spending that money ?Burnin a hole in your pocket ? Spend it on some aftermarket shocks :YEAH
If your not racing it, who cares about the drag race
you might have been beat in the drag, but on rough terrain you will kill with some good shocks.
Your young save it for a truck so you can go riding whenever and whereever you want.
buy a new pair of kicks ?
your dad is right don't bore that new bike untill you need to !!
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
First, do you have it jetted properly? If not then pick up a jet kit for like 40 bucks and have it jetted. With that K&N your gettin alot more air commin. That will easily awaken your beast. You could get a new cam wich would help out with power, and you can also try some different gearing combos. All that will help you with your power and where you want it.
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
thanks for all your help! i am thinking i am just going to buy a jet kit, and save the rest towards some accesories for the truck i will be saving up for. when i turn 16 in november, hopefully by then i should be able to go truck shoppin( i already have like 2 g's towards it, but i think i should keep saving to get a nice vehicle) thanks again guys!
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
Just bought a truck two days ago...

'05 Canyon, Inline 5, 4x4...
and on yer question, maybe if you want a bit more accel. next year if you need a new chain go a tooth or three bigger on your rear sprocket, you lose on top, but accel. is better.

Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
nice truck man! hey nycblaster, for what reasons do you suggest new handlebars? i know my buddy put a little bit shorter handlebars on his 660 raptor, and it is easier for him to do high chairs.
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
I don't think bars will help you wheelie better, but when you roll it your stock ones will be bent but nice aftermarket ones are tough, I recommend Tag X-5's, I got Factory 909's, and for like, 30 bucks more I coulda got the Tag's and they look much nicer.
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
Be careful there is a bar curse, my buddy got a set and he rolled while doing donuts, he uncovered a huge rock inbedded in the sand and rolled, but the bars held up. I put 'em on and went for a drive to test 'em and ended up smokin' a tree, but the bars held up (the plastics have stress marks in 'em though). Not the bars fault though, but it's the new bar curse!
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
if you only have a slip on you could buy a header pipe...
for like $205 in Rocky Mountain ATV you can get the tag big bar kit with bar clamps, nice T2 bars and barpad.
saving some more for the shocks would be a good investment., if you could stretch your budget to $400, some ebay store has these deals on HiPer carbon fiber beadlocks. little pricey though, i think that's only for 2 wheels and tires.
whoever said get a cam was right. stage 1 i reccomend. do they make aftermarket rev boxes for those things? if so they only run about $100.
good luck with it man, have fun

Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
If you do any kind of woods riding I think you need some skid plates. My cousin picked up a full set from I think atvfan.com for 200$ for his raptor. We were disapointed with the strength of the stock skids, I'll let you know how these hold up we should be getting them any day now.
If you can stretch it to 400$, that's enough for a full tire and wheel package from rockymountainatv.

Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
You guys were saying get aftermarket bars so they won't bend when u roll it, but I had a set of renthals on my raptor and I rolled it the other day and must've twisted my steering stem or something cuz when i rode off i had to be turning left to go straight it seemed. my dad thinks it just twisted on the bottom or something, we'll take it apart next week.
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
yeah i have all the skid plates, but if i didnt have them, i would buy them fo'sho. if i were to buy a new cam, how difficult is that to install? hey disecard, that z250 is pretty sweet looking! how do you like those Razr tires? i was thinking about buying a set of the Razr 2's. actually, i have a question for anyone out there. given my scenario, what rear tires do you think would be better to get for hardpacked dirt, mud and woods riding: the Holeshot HD's or Razr2's. I do most of my stunting on hardpacked dirt, but you might as well consider it pavement because it wears down the tires just as quick. thank you everyone for all your advice!
Re: Performance on a budget: Need some advice
You could mill the head, which would raise compression (may require higher octane fuel depending on how far you go with it) or you could de-burr the ports yourself with a dremel (which would give you a very small power boost)
