la la la.. 5am..
I wish more of the women riders would coach the newbie stunters like myself.. the guys lend a hand whenever they can. The ladies should be showing the love as well. Maybe I'm just askin' wrong.

Any help is appreciated. Most of the guys I know who stunt ride, or try to, weigh 200 plus pounds.. so their advice is geared around heavier riders. I weigh in at 165 so when they tell me to go heavy on the throttle it puts me way up in the air too quick, so I get that "feeling" like when you go over a hill too fast, pucker up... and let off the throttle which puts me back on Earth a little too rough. I think what I need to know is how some of the lighter riders handle their throttle response on their particular bikes. I have a new R6 and I'm having some trouble with the balance point as well. Maybe it's my big *** hanging too far back but I can't seem to find it nearly as often as I'd like to. I wouldn't be opposed to in person help either if any Cleveland, OH local riders can spare the time. I know you are a bit too far away for that Carm.

It is really hard for me to give advice on how to learn to wheelie. I had many years of motocross experience before I ever tried to wheelie a streetbike, so it was easier for me to learn standing up.
I tried the sitting down thing and it felt really awkward, so I stood up and could wheelie about 100 feet on my first day trying.
The best advice I can give you is to go very slow. Take your time and don't ride over your head. You can't learn anything if you're hurt and your bike is all f-ed up.
Are you clutching or bouncing it up?(I clutch it.) How long have you been riding motorcycles? Do you have access to a small dirtbike with a clutch? (i.e. XR, TTR, KLX) They are good practice and it doesn't hurt/cost as much to crash.
The most important thing that I have learned is not to dress for the ride, dress for the fall. Good luck and be careful.

Total years in riding I've got 11 but I can't count them as really productive years because I was, at best, a weekend rider. And I wasn't trying to freestyle much. My buddies would let me ride their dirtbikes, quads, etc. A few times I would ride their street bikes but most were just cruisers. Then as so many impressional kids did, I watched the FTP video and decided that it was really boring keeping both wheels down ALL the time. So finally I got one of my own, a bike that is. I am starting out small but getting better every time. However it's nearly impossible for me have any decent place to practice.. I won't do it on residential streets and everywhere I've gone to practice the cops swarm to in a matter of minutes. I nearly ran into a cop after just dropping the front wheel down as he came flying around a corner of an abandoned shopping center. Not to mention that every time I fire the old girl up the police are driving down my street within 5 minutes.. no joke. I'm planning on getting a steering damper for my bike but I'm not sure which to get.. SCOTT and Ohlin's are the foremost in my mind but I'm not 100% sure since I've not heard much about the qualities/problems of any others. As for a lil dirt bike, I promised my son I'd get him (coughing) one. I'll probably ride it alot more than he will, at least until he gets a bit older. In order to get the front up on my bike I usually roll on or let the suspension kick it up. I have clutched it up but I'm not comfortable with it due to how little practice I get, mostly it happens on accident.. maybe I shouldn't admit that. I'm not on with the timing for bouncing it up, I seem to interrupt it more when I try that. At stuntfest someone told me to video tape my wheelies to help me see my mechanics of how I'm doing them but like I said before, no where to go to do that... without the police.
Gina... BTW wasn't that wreck on the JD2 video? Looked like it hurt a bit, please tell me it wasn't you.

scotts or ohlins are the only damper to buy. i like scotts because of the dual adjustability, but either is fine. once you have one you won't know how you rode without it.. my R1 is like 500% more stablewith it.. i can do a lot of hairy stuff and still pull it off.
as far as places to practice.. they are hard to find a lot.. gotta look for industrial parks and neighborhoods that are just being built (so road but no homes) usually.. stuff like that. or a road WAY out in the country somewhere. i'm moving to vegas next month.. hopefully the desert will be better than around hereis..
I hear that. I was leaning towards the SCOTT damper but one of my compadres told me to look around so I wasn't getting hosed on the price of a "Name" if you know what I'm saying. So I think that about makes up my mind for that. As far as finding a place.. I guess I'll have to go out into the country to practice seeing as my bike is very recognizible... and my stupid *** put a custom plate on the back. All the industrial joints around here are where the cops are hiding out eating jelly doughnuts and getting :splat from unsuspecting prey that got pulled over for speeding in an attempt to get out of a ticket.. NO joke, they've busted a few of them already.

scotts and ohlins are the only way to go. you arent paying for a name, you are paying for the best damper you can buy. expect to pay around $400 to your door if you are very lucky.. maybe $420 if you don't shop around as much... scotts has it set at a minimum price dealers can offer you. ohlins is consistently another $20 on top of scotts price
www.tobefast.com shipped mine for $412 total.
you might be able to find one used for a good price, but it's hard to find the exact fitment you need (e.g. model + year of bike. for instance the 98-01 R1 won't fit 02-03)
it's worth $400.. trust me. my stoppies went from 100 feet on a good day, barely able to ride out the headshakes.. to 300 feet on a good day, and now it's just geetin crooked that is screwin me up..

Videotaping is a great learning tool. Not having a safe place to practice must suck. I drive an hour and a half to practice at a dragstrip that has an owner who supports our local Stunters. Have you checked out any tracks in your area?
I run a Scotts damper and I love it. I wish I had already had it the day of my crash. I was standing on the seat and came down from a wheelie at about 60 to 70 mph into a tankslapper. I haven't seen JD2 yet, but I'm pretty sure my crash is in it.
Laura from Redline Extreme uses the bounce technique and could give you some good advice. Good luck girl.

Ok, so you all talked me into the SCOTT's damper kit.. just ordered it and paid $460... a little higher than what you paid but what's 40 bucks when you're talking about piece of mind right? Anyway, I guess I've just gotta drive to the boonies.. or see if I can get some track time @ Thompson Drag Way, which is in the boonies. BTW Gina, I'm not a girl but thanks for the encouragement just the same.
Although some of my "friends" say I wheelie like a girl, after seeing how good some of you ladies are.. I'll have no problem with considering it as a compliment!
