Xr400 Front end swap to CR?

Is this possible? Im lookin at a couple XR400, but I want the inverts of the CR/CRF line. Since most Honda sportbikes are swappable, Im think the dirtbikes might be also.

Anyone know?

Also, can you ghetto rig CBR wheels to work on it instead of buying Excel Rims?

With a bit of machining of the hubs, cast wheels will go in. You'll probably want a rear rim off a CBR400 though. Motards normally have a 4.25, 4.5 or on those where it squeezes in, a 5in. rear.

I've seen a few motards with cast rims, but it'd cost a similar amount to get your XR hubs spoked up with motard rims, unless you've got lots of beer, and a good friend with a lathe.

If you cant get a entire assembly (forks, wheel, clamps, steering stem) there may be a chance, but I dooubt it. That XR hasnt changed since 1980s so the frame is going to be smaler and the neck of the frame probably won't house the steering stem from the CRF

Well, the CBR F2 hasnt changed and the 1000RR will fit it.. so why would the DB series be any different?

I want facts, not speculation.

Re: Xr400 Front end swap to CR?

You'll always be able to either get the Xr stem pressed into the CR triples, or find suitable bearings to fit. At worst you get two collars machined up to make it all fit.

To be honest, you'll probably not gain anything changing to USD forks. The best thing about RWU forks is that they stay cleaner and therefore wreck seals less frequently.

And on another note, the WR is abso-fookin'-lutely brilliant. Used to have a DRZ, but the WR is better in nearly every way.
Weighs about 125kilos full of fuel, and absolutely flies for a dirtbike.

The XR400's are heavier, but bulletproof.

A WR400/426 would be a better bet, as it has the upside-down forks, and is lighter and has better ergonomics. Makes significantly more power, and has infinitely better throttle response thanks to the flatslide carb. Also the YZ400/426 plastics go straight on.
The WR engines are very reliable if serviced regularly, the 400 more so, as it has steel valves, as opposed to the Titanium valves in the 426.

Great stunt tool, but way beyond my capabilities at the moment. I need lots more practice.

Re: Xr400 Front end swap to CR?

There ya go.. thanks man! And my reasons for thinking XR was reliability. Ive heard, just heard mind you, that the newer MX style bikes (YZF, CRF) couldnt handle alot of street miles. I'm also looking at the XR650R's. And the one mod I did hear they needed was flatside carbs to prevent bogging out on 12'ves and coasters.

Thanks for the input!

No worries.

The benefit of the enduro bikes over the motocross ones is that they have a lower 1st gear so you don't need pizza sprockets, and they have a higher 5th, so you don't have to rag them on the road.

The WR is dry sumped too, so you shouldn't have oil starvation problems.

Oil change every 300 miles though. I do mine every 150.

Re: Xr400 Front end swap to CR?

Answered my original question:

CR500 forks. You have to use the stock XR steering stem and have it shimmed into the CR clamp to make it work.

Got that suggestion from Thumpers.com/ but I'm sure other model CR's would work, but the CR500 he said definately work.

I've got a CR125 in my garage. d'you want any measurements taken??

I'd imagine you could have the stem pressed into any set of triple clamps though.

Re: Xr400 Front end swap to CR?

Yeah, I would imagine most CRs are pretty simular. But I remember some years when the 125's and 250's had Showa and the 500 had Kayaba forks.

Thanks for the offer to measure, but I'm going the WR route. Everyone I talked to agrees with you that its the right choice.
