I think asking randoms if he should or should not isn't the best way to go about it. What they think does not matter at all. This is the most personal of decision you can make, but make sure he talks it over with family too. I'm glad to hear you concerned for him though.
What does he want out of his enlistment? Does he want to make it a career? Does he want to do his five like me and get out? I think anytime anyone wants to join the military it speaks volumes for that person's character.
To give up everything you know and love for years at a time, for your country is an amazing thing. It's a huge sacrifice, but the benefits during and after his enlistment are amazing.
The educational benefits so far have had the biggest impact on my life. From day one of boot camp, you get $100 take out of your paycheck for the first 12 months for the MGIB (Montgomery GI Bill) and then when you get out (or if you say in, but only after two years) it's worth a sold $990 per every month you are enrolled full time in college, which is 3 courses at most colleges. And in MA, veterans go to state schools for free, and the MGIB still pays you, so it's legal double dipping.
Plus, when you are on active duty, the Army/Navy/Marines pay 100% of your college tuition up to $4500 every year, and this has nothing at all to do with your MGIB. That's what I’ve been doing. I've taken 7 college courses in the past year, all free of charge.
Not to mention VA benefits, like ridiculously low down payment mortgages at great rates, and they've got plenty of programs that fund starting your own business or purchasing a franchise. Good stuff to read up on: http://www.va.gov/
The pay isn't that great for your first couple years. I'm only starting to make good $$ and I've only got 33 months in. But you get free room and bored, so if you're smart with your money, all you do is pay off your pre-existing debts from before you joined and you're golden for saving some serious $$.
But, keep in mind that if he joins the Army or Marine Corps, he'll probably end up in Iraq or Afgahnaland for an extended period of time. It's a great opportunity to save tons of tax free dollars, but war is hell, remember that.
I'm rambling on here. I'll make this quick. If I had to choose one piece of advice to give it would be make sure that whatever magical story the recruiter cooks up, make ABSOLUTE sure it's written into his contract before he signs it. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. Recruiters will lie cheat and generally tell you anything that you need to hear to get you to sign up, they a bloodthirsty merciless bunch.
Also, sit him down and have him read this: http://www.hoo-ah.net/ It's probably the most honest accont of Army enlistment I've read. Good eye opener so far.
Hit me up with some specific questions, that'll help my carpal tunnel syndrome SL has given me.
