Here's the story.
Rockland man is critical after being shot in the face
By Ari Herzog, Enterprise correspondent
ROCKLAND — A Rockland man was in critical condition after being shot in the face Tuesday afternoon.
Matthew Cahill, 21, of 22 Blanchard St. was transported by ambulance to Boston Medical Center after police received a 911 call at 1:30 p.m.
According to a statement released by police, Cahill said on the 911 tape that he had been shot.
Detective Dennis Donovan and officer Richard Novio responded to the scene and found Cahill "bleeding profusely from a gunshot," the statement said.
It is unknown what part of his face was shot or what type of gun was used, officer Brian Coakley said.
Fire Lt. John Duhaine arrived with firefighter-paramedics Danny DelPrete, Heidi James and Marc Oshry. They requested a medical helicopter, but instead transported Cahill by ambulance to Boston Medical Center.
At 9 p.m. Tuesday night, Coakley said Cahill remained in critical condition. No further information was available.
"We didn't hear anything and we're right across the street," said Paula Mahoney.
She said she does not know the occupants of the house, who are young and have not lived there very long.
She said the victim appeared to be conscious when he was taken from the scene by paramedics.
Blanchard Street is a residential area of older, single-family and apartment houses. It is tucked in behind the business district of Rockland Center.
A neighbor said Cahill lived at the house for about three weeks.
The investigation continues as police search for a suspect.
Enterprise staff writer Elaine Allegrini contributed to this story.
